It's working for me. Not great but works. I prefer a plugin with problems for me in a few webs and no problems in others than nothing.

Please, do so, it was painful enough to deal with not having flash for so long before nspluginwrapper that I can't imagine having to install firefox-bin again just for a few java applets. Even if they work wrong, as flash sometimes does, it's better than not having it. Thanks for your work.

Not that works on amd64 (in 64 bit mode) unless something big has changed.

So much for democracy, there is a 60/40 split keeping it and yet it was removed anyways. Thanks.

It wasn't removed. It was package.use.mask'ed:
${PORTDIR}/profiles/base/package.use.mask wrote:# Petteri Räty <betelgeuse@gentoo.org> (27 Apr 2007)
# package.use.masked for security bug #161835
# Not removed from ebuilds because this is the only 64 bit plugin
# on amd64.
dev-java/blackdown-jdk nsplugin
dev-java/blackdown-jre nsplugin
To unmask the nsplugin USE flag, create the file /etc/portage/profile/package.use.mask and add either or both of the following lines (the syntax is just like package.use):

Code: Select all

dev-java/blackdown-jdk -nsplugin
dev-java/blackdown-jre -nsplugin
If you feel the issues discussed in this thread have been resolved, please add a "[Solved]" to the subject of your original posting.

Is the reason there isn't a Sun-Java 64 bit plugin because Sun hasn't developed one yet? I'm new to 64 bit systems. Just finished building this box last week.

This is true currently but Java7/OpenJDK will have a 64bit plugin. If you want a native 64bit plugin you'll just have to wait for that.

Well actually that's good news and I'll wait. There is still the old Blackdown-1.4.2 plugin if one must have java 64 bit right now but I've chosen to remove it and everything Blackdown.

I for one can continue playing Go at KGS. Thanks to the devs for not removing the 64bit Java plugin completely.

I must admit I'm surprised at the pace of this... I'd have expected a similar announcement to the 'last rites' in the GWN, perhaps with a warning and the info to unmask, given that this is potentially more major than me wondering why I can't play online poker for 10 minutes ;)

btw if it was in the GWN and I missed it, ignore me!

You can still install the plugin using /etc/portage/profile/package.use.mask as pointed out to me earlier in this thread.

the package.use.mask is a a great tip, I had manually symlinked the plugin into the directory, but adding the necessary entries to the package.use.mask is a much cleaner alternative. Thanks again.

Thats not true Java6 and I thin Java5 are complete ports to x86_64, but in Sun's infinite wisdom they thought it would be better to not port the plugin.

Code: Select all

Hey, I did hear from this problem today first time.
If the browser do crash or not depends to the Java programmers themself.
I know many complicated Java applets and they do all work without any problem, have a look here:
http://www.playray.com/
There you will find many complicated games, and I noticed never a problem with them. So I hear here today first time from problems. But I know from a simple Java chat which my wife likes to use, that craches the browser. I thougt the chat programmer is accessing some Windows shit, but looks like now read different.

It's good that the plugin is not removed at all, so I can still play my games which I play in 64 bit since 1.5 years without any problem. :D

I'm not a Java programmer, but for me it looks like when an applet do crash the browser, this applet is not worth to be used at all.
Use the firefox/seamonkey noscript extension for pages which have bad programmed applets included, so that they can not crash your browser.
AMD Phenom II x4 >> CFLAGS="-march=amdfam10 -O2 -mmmx -msse3 -mfpmath=sse,387 -pipe -ffast-math" is stable and here in use.

Did Intel produce at any time bugfree HW?

I'm just curious. Has anyone gotten the above to work? From the portage manpage it should, but for me the nsplugin USE flag is still excluded when blackdown is emerged.

create a file named package.use.mask under /etc/portage/profile and add the lines

Thanks. It was the little detail of the profile directory which I hadn't created. I hadn't read carefully enough and I placed package.use.mask in /etc/portage instead of in /etc/portage/profile.

At the moment I have no java at all, the blackdown makes firefox crash as soon as I open a page with java. Sun has none and I don't know how I can get the 32bit java nsplugin to work? nspluginwrapper works fine with the 32bit flash plugin, though.

What are you doing at the moment to have java available in firefox? Is there any way to get a java working with 64bit firefox?
