New CNN videos

  • Quote

Post by Drewgrange » Mon Jul 02, 2007 10:05 pm

I'm trying out CNN's new website and it isn't working very well. Is it just me or is their linux support not good?

The new live feed doesn't start at all, and when I try to watch the video clips at www.cnn.com/video they play the advertisement at the beginning and then crap out. I guess that is better than when the site was in beta; the videos wouldn't even start for me then.

I'm using the latest firefox and flash plugin

I just get a black box. Not even an advertisement.

The site sure takes its time to load.

I don't get past the commercial either.

Thanks to the SUSE forums: get the User Agent Switch extension, select Netscape 4.8 (Windows Vista), and CNN videos work.

Now that's what I call Linux-unfriendly! :x

How strange.

Yes the video clips work fine after this workaround. Stupid CNN

The free live feed still seems to be unusable for linux uses (possibly mac as well). Now when I try to view it it wants me to install wmvfirefoxplugin.exe.

This workaround works well, but....

Any permanent solutions yet?

Live feed

I tried to view the live feed while under Windows using Opera and it said I had to install wmvfirefoxpluginsetup.exe. Maybe a wine wrapper could work on this?

Edit:

Even after installing the files, I am still unable to view the live feed while using Opera under Windows. Hope you have better luck with firefox under Linux. Personally, I prefer the BBC though, although I hear CNN International is actually reputable. Regular CNN is just rubbish, imho

I had the same problem where the videos wouldn't play, but as of a few days ago it seems to work. Occasionally it still fails but simply clicking the link to the video again while the advertisement is still playing seems to work most (if not, all) of the time.

EDIT: This is with Firefox 2.0.0.4 and Flash 9.0 r31
