A while ago I set thunderbird to automatically open .doc files with ooffice (then called ooffice-2 or something). However, the program name got changed with the recent versions, and so it cannot find it anymore ('file could not be opened, because the associated helper application does not exist). Unfortunately, there is no entry in the helper applications list in the preferences for DOC files, and so I cannot change it, and there is no 'add action' button. What is going on, how can I change the action to point to the new ooffice program?

Well, if you save the Mail directory, you can just wipe the ~/.thunderbird, create a new profile, re-setup the accounts, copy the Mail directory into the new profile, then set the correct attachment viewer. You could also find out how it's supposed to store helper entries, then manually create a key. It might override whatever it is that's causing this.
