  • Quote

Post by txc » Fri Jun 22, 2007 12:24 am

i did an emerge --sync and an emerge -uD world, and here´s what happened: i used to use this kernel: linux-2.6.19-gentoo-r5/ and now at /usr/src there are 2 more directories: linux-2.6.20-gentoo-r7/ ; and linux-2.6.20-gentoo-r8/, i just cant access the X because of some nvidia driver error, i dont know what to do, is there someone who can help me?

It would be much more useful to show the error message. Anyway, you probably just need:

Code: Select all

emerge nvidia-drivers
This is needed after recompiling the kernel, because nvidia is a kernel module.

Code: Select all

$ equery files nvidia-drivers | grep ko
/lib/modules/2.6.22-rc5/video/nvidia.ko

Try to download and install NVI*.run from nvidia website under unix and run this as root. "./NVI*.run"

You can also run "xorgconf" as root and follow the options might have better luck then selecting "nv" under xorg instead of a specific nvidia driver.

GCC:
I downloaded 4.2.0 from the gcc website and compiled it but it takes half a day or close to it.

emerge -uD gcc
emerge -uD nvidia-drivers
Or
have a look at the error log
!!! A complete build log is located at '/var/tmp/portage/sys-devel/gcc-4.1.2/temp/build.log'

Hope this helps.

are because nvidia-drivers aren't compiled against the running kernel, just like PaulBredbury said. There's nothing wrong with your xorg.config. Just make sure that the /usr/src/linux symlink points to the sources for the kernel you want to run, say it's 2.6.20-r8 then you should have

Code: Select all

ls -l /usr/src/linux
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 22 16 jun 19:26 /usr/src/linux -> linux-2.6.20-gentoo-r8
and then, when you have compiled the kernel:

Code: Select all

emerge nvidia-drivers
like Paul said. About the gcc problem I really don't know, but there should be more info about the error before the lines you quoted.
