automount not working for usb devices

  • Quote

Post by dodo1122 » Wed Jun 06, 2007 4:14 pm

Hi,

I have a problem with automounting in both xfce and kde. When i insert a cd it mounts it, but when i insert in a pendrive, ipod or anything else, it doesnt mount it automatically. On xfce, i get an error that i dont have a permission to mount devices, but im in plugdev and cdrom group (so is hal). I tried reinstalling hal, dbus, udev, but it does not help at all.

here is dmesg after inserting in an ipod:

here it is:

are you in the usb group? A list of groups to be found at /etc/group might be helpful in identifying other groups of which you must be a part.

I asked for fstab because I know you can allow things to be mounted by users in there, but you don't have the cdrom drive listed, so that must not be relevant.

hi

I use gnome 2.18. Since I have changed to new hal it works under gnome. Maybe this will also do it for you!

i've got hal-0.5.9-r1. i even tried downgrading to 0.5.7.1-r1, but the problem persists. Tried downgrading udev is well, no luck there either.

No unmerge/emerge is needed.
Simply look at /usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/ for a fdi file blocking automount.

On my case it was gparted that closed with an error and didn't delete the file gparted-disable-automount.fdi at this directory. The solution was simply open gparted and close it again (with the same user that opened it before).

Deleting the hal directory will erase several config files used by hal, but not owned by the hal package and reemerging won't restore it.

I had the same problem with automounting usb-sticks. Everything else worked ok (CD,DVD,card-reader).
Tried all that was mentioned in this thread with no success and here's where I found the solution

http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/HAL ... _correctly
If you are experiencing problems with automounting usb sticks and/or drives, but do not have problems with automounting CDs or DVDs, and if you are able to manually mount the USB device in question, then you should create the file "preferences.fdi" in the folder /etc/hal/fdi/policy and paste the following line into the file

<merge key="volume.ignore" type="bool">false</merge>
Of course with gentooo the path should be /usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/10osvendor/preferences.fdi
And life's back to normal again.

I'm an gnome 2.20 and gparted crash on my system sometimes , after it crashed I was unable to automount usb flash, firing up gparted and close it properly solved the issue.

Thank You

This solved my problem too. It's a very strange solution to a very strange problem. I wonder what causes it..
