Gentoo Weekly Newsletter

  • Quote

Post by massctrl » Mon Jun 04, 2007 1:07 pm

Hi all,

I'm a bit bothered with the fact that the GWN is hardly a weekly newsletter.
I know that maintaining weekly news requires a lot of work, dedication and resources,.... Not always easy.
With all respect to the GWN maintainers, but the way it goes now just looks stupid, sloppy and ridiculous!
Wouldn't it be better just to cancel the whole GWN and use the front-page of Gentoo to publish news whenever something useful needs to be published?
Honestly this (very) inconsistent publishing of a WEEKLY newsletter hurts the reputation of Gentoo to the public opinion. Or at least it doesn't help.

Just a thought,....

Cheers,

As far as I'm aware it does come out weekly. While it may be a couple of days late there is
nothing that says it has to be out on a Monday.

If you're unhappy with the GWN, why not help out by becoming a contributor. I know they're always
looking for people to contribute in some way or another.

In my 0.02c worth of opinion the GWN is a great little resource and while it can be
improved on in a couple of places there isn't any need for
looks stupid, sloppy and ridiculous!
Anyhoo...back to work....

I agree. It's not that low...

In time not that far away, the GWN was in fact released much more regularly, that's true. I guess there in need of contributors/helpers/ressources. A name change may be in order if the team can't cope with a 'weekly' schedule, that's all. The 'Gentoo Newsletter' would be perfect to me.

I don't really want to see its name changed to gentoo newsletter, even if its not weekly its a constant reminder to the people that do it that it should be done weekly

Read this thread and you'll learn why the GWN has been late and what you can do to help.

As there has been a consistent problem over a long time now, wouldn't it be more realistic to make a monthly newsletter instead of a weekly one?

If you've gotten a newsletter (online or via e-mail) since May 7th, I'd like to see it! GWN is bordering on not even being GMN at this point.
As for those who suggest complainers volunteer to help: I did, once, a long time ago. Never even got a reply.
Nothing to see here. Move along.

Not to be bitching or anything, I understand the GWN team members have lives, but if they are having trouble bringing out a weekly newsletter once a week then they should change the name from Gentoo Weekly Newletter to just Gentoo Newsletter.

Simple answer: Yes

More complex answer:
Unfortunately, over the last month or so, many of the GWN team have been extremely busy, with house moves, new jobs, exams, and so on. We are working to get a new GWN out ASAP.

If you want to see more GWNs with more articles, why don't you send us articles to gwn-feedback@gentoo.org - any articles are greatly appreciated, and will help us get the GWN out on time.

Well, maybe it would be worth to say this in other forums, or in a GWN! I'm sure there's people that would like to contribute to it. Maybe 'gwn-contributions@gentoo.org'.

I'd be happy to help out in some way with the GWN (as would others, I'm sure), but I think the maintainers need to give us a better articulation of what kind of help is needed. Just saying "send us articles" doesn't really cut it.

If you are looking for someone to contribute whole articles, I don't think I'm your guy, because I still feel like I am more on the "learner" side of the curve with Gentoo and Linux in general.

If you need someone to edit bits of news into readable format, or write things based on information that can be found elsewhere, I can do that. I feel like I have enough writing skill to be useful if someone else provides (some of) the actual content.

As an outside observer, it seems like "more articles" aren't really what is needed to move the GWN along. Someone knows what is going on in the Gentoo community generally, so if that person can identify a writer (like me, for example) and point him in the right direction, then something printable would result. It might be as simple as saying, "[some kind of change] is about to happen in [X, or Portage, or whatever]. You need to talk to this person. Go write me something about it."

Weekly News?

  • Quote

Post by Freman » Sun Dec 09, 2007 9:04 pm

G'day all,

Just wondering if anyone else thinks we've been living in one long week?

Last weekly news post was Oct 15 2007 - Now I've had some long weeks, but this
is getting a little to long yes?

Throughout history, GWN has lagged behind. Throughout history, people have been curious about the state of GWN; the answer was always "give and ye shall receive."

So how are things coming with the Gentoo Yearly Newsletter?
Seriously... lack of articles is no real excuse. There's always news. Packages updated, bugs opened, bugs closed, hot threads from the forums, the mailing lists, or Planet Gentoo... My offer to help is no longer open (I don't even use Gentoo anymore), but on the multiple occasions I offered I never even got a "no thank you"... just no reply at all. I think some well-meaning Gentooist with energy should stage a coup and just start publishing a weekly newsletter. I think you'll get help, and I think the community really needs it. Good luck guys!
Nothing to see here. Move along.

ACK. You should definitely do something about the frontpage, the last "weekly" Newsletter looks really... stupid right now, sorry. Get a newsletter going again or remove it from the frontpage, the current situation is just ugly as hell.

Agreed. Something really needs to be done. It doesn't matter how great things are with Gentoo, if that's what people see on the front page, it gives a very bad impression.
