Icecast and user permissions

  • Quote

Post by microtechno » Mon Nov 27, 2006 12:20 pm

I just installed icecast to broadcast media from my server but i keep getting the error

Code: Select all

server icecast # icecast -c /etc/icecast2/icecast.xml
Changed groupid to 1002.
Changed userid to 1002.
FATAL: could not open error logging (/var/lib/icecast/error.log): Permission denied
FATAL: could not open access logging (/var/lib/icecast/access.log): Permission denied
FATAL: Could not start logging
I dont belive that it is icecast but my user permissions. The user is caller 'ice' and has wheel, audio, portage groups
thanks in advance

i would change the owner of /var/lib/icecast to icecast and change the owner of access.log and error.log in that directory to icecast as well. i thin that should solve your problem right up.

although, i would mention that the preferred method for logging services is to have them use the system logger; you may want to configure icecast to do so, if possible.

just change the permissions and let icecast do it's own logging; and keep an eye on how large it gets.

i have no idea how to configure icecast. but there may be a log option in its configuration files i guess.

the thing is though that i dont know how to change the permissions to a folder or file.
I also cannot find anywhere on the web, gentoo.org and this forum so far that shows how to change permissions.
Also i as i am new to linux and gentoo i dont know how to change the loging.
The loging in icecast can be set to a size and is set to 50kb i belive. it is the config file (got that part right)
thanks

You'll probably need to know about fsck then (See man fsck for more details).
