I've always found games-strategy/glob2 fun

http://globulation2.org/

I would just install porthole (app-portage/porthole) and let your sister search through games/* until she finds something interesting

she's on ubunters (sister = great way to try new ubunters versions :))

I'll try to show her globulation but she's not that much into strategy

does it do multiplayer? I played multiplayer stronghold a few times with her (i could install stronghold in wine it works brilliantly well)

Yup, both on a LAN and through a public matchmaking server (http://globulation2.org/wiki/YOG) over the Internet

I figured strategy was a sort of simulation, she might like it, who knows. Globulation is a bit different from similar games in that you don't control individual units, but kind of herd them. Sort of like LiquidWar (http://www.ufoot.org/liquidwar/v5) but a bit more complex. I don't have a ubuntu install handy, but it looks like there should be a package.

In response to the NETHACK comment above, I second that, but suggest ADOM (http://adom.de/) as being easier to learn. Fun, but probably not what your sister has in mind.

If you want a MMORPG you might look into http://eternal-lands.com/

Install ScummVM then head over to ScummVM.org and grab all the free games that the engine supports. Beneath a Steel Sky and Flight of the Amazon Queen are IIRC freely available on their site.

Also try and grab some of the not-quite-yet-but-practically-Abandonware LEC games like Monkey Island and Day of the Tentacle, and who can forget Sam'n'Max! :D (Not the butchered evil DRM-ridden ones that Telltale made, but the Original one!)
Broken Sword and Gobliiiiins! series are quite fun too :)
