Maybe we could get your patch in the gentoo ebuild?

Since it's been some time now and the main wine branch still doesn't include them.

anybody here playing gw with cedega?
which version of it do you use?
i've played gw with cedega some time ago (november, dont remember which version of cedega was that) and it was working as good as in win%$#& - on max details, 1280x1024
right now with cedega 5.2.3, engine-5.2.10 it's f*ckin unusable even on lower details

yeah, back a while ago it was incredibly smooth in cedega with directx 10 fx on and everything, wish someone recorded what version that was. Right now even in dx8 mode the net connection is so craptacular that i can barely target an enemy before I'm 20 feet past the fight.

latest wine works

The latest release of wine (9.34) works pretty well without any patching. Cursor is visible, and everything seems to load and play fine, except for battle sounds. It's pretty slow though, with some other programs running i'm getting 15-25 fps average. Also, anything over "basic" shadows gives corrupted textures around the char's feet. Other than that, it seems fine.

*EDIT* Well, that didn't last long. They updated the client, and now it won't load; instead it just eats up all system resources and needs to be manually killed.

*EDIT (again)* Turns out that it can still work, you just need to use the -nosound flag; they changed to the FMOD engine for their sounds, and that borked it.

I also got it working, at my full resolution for once too! (2560x1600) :D

I did have to use the -nosound, but also added the -dx8 flags to Gw.exe because some things for DX9 are still not finished. I think it looks a little better with -dx8 instead.

Sure hope they fix the sound, that will finally complete the #1 game I've been waiting to play on Linux.

EDIT: found a fix, use -dsound. I got music and interface sounds, but no effects from spells/damage.

So complete line is

Code: Select all

wine Gw.exe -dsound -dx8 -noshaders

Yeah, -dsound works, and I have to wonder what it is about battle sounds that makes it so that they won't play. I use the default (dx9), and there are some strange graphical glitches, but otherwise it goes pretty well. I get some weird block-like things the occlude areas in the distance, and some shaders (reflections on water) don't work. But just trying -dx8, it seemed to vary more wildly in framerate; also, I thought that I saw someone talking on wine's page (or appdb), about how dx9 was more feature complete than dx8?

Either way, it works well enough to play, as long as you don't mind it being a bit slower than windows, and not quite as "purty".

Also, holy crap that's a big monitor. 8O

I just wanted to note that with the release of Cedega 6.0 I am able to play GW in DX9 mode with all the nice shiny graphics:

Hyper_Eye: Does it still work? What hardware do you use and what detail level. How many fps do you get?

On the latest WINE (9.36), you can get almost complete graphic fidelity compared w/ windows; the only problems I've noticed are: anything over "low" shadows are corrupted, and blocks of color (light usually, like the average of the area it's in) in the distance. (and sound, but that's a whole other thing) The blocking may be tied to my using GLSL, which is not complete; I haven't tried turning it off yet because it doesn't bother me.

EDIT: yes, the blocking of placeables (trees, etc.) is tied to having GLSL enabled, with it disabled, it looks as good, seems to run the same

As for performance, well, that's not as good; though it definitely is playable. I probably average 15-20 fps, higher in less dense areas, lower in crowded missions/cities (then it's around 10-11); and loading always takes me longer than my windows using friend.

I have an athlon xp 2500+, and a geforce 6800, with every setting put to high, except shadows, no anti-aliasing, in a 1024x768 virtual desktop; also no sync to vert. refresh, as that seemed to make the mouse disappear (for at least longer than normal).

Yes it does still work. I am running at 1280x1024 with all graphics maxed except shadows which I lowered a single notch because I didn't like the shadows being turned on for everyone in towns. I didn't turn them down for performance reasons. As far as framerate I am getting similar framerates with Directx9 mode in Cedega 6.0 as I got in Directx8 mode with any version previous. Out in the world I generally get between 40 and 70 fps. Inside a busy town I get between 20 and 30 fps. As you can see from the screenshots directx9 mode is working perfectly with full-scene glow and everything. I have seen no graphical corruption. I had to set my winver to WinXP to make GW switch to dx9 mode. I also had to enable Pixel Shaders and Vertex Shaders version 2.0.

BTW: If you have signatures enabled in your profile you should see my hardware specs in my sig.
