Unfortunately that's about all I can tell you. Normally when emerge fails, it throws a nice error message I can post here. That is not the case this time. The best I can give you is:

Code: Select all

I've reinstalled Gentoo on this system about 4 times in the last week. Not a fun task. I'm more than ready for it to FINALLY be installed and done with. However my Radeon X1950's performance on the desktop is about half that of the 6 year old card in my lesser computer. That simply won't do. I'm hoping that drivers specific to my video card will help.

Remove "Paravirutalization support" (since 2.6.20) under "Processor types and features" in the kernel.

Why reinstalling so much?

Cool, thanks. I went with the unmasking the 8.35.5 drivers as I couldn't find "Paravirutalization support" in the kernel config. Hopefully it works.

I end up reinstalling because I'll get to installing X and KDE and it will seem that I emerged one or the other without certain USE flags which end up causing trouble down the line when trying to install other programs. One notable experience was I wasn't able to install Firefox because a certain library file that X used wasn't configured with a certain USE flag, so I had to unemerge that, put the use flag in, then reemerge it. Happened with several programs so I was like, "Okay, now I know I need these flags, I'll just start fresh and pretend none of this ever happened." So far as I can tell, I've got all the right use flags, so I'm trying to get X to really take advantage of my video card.

Edit:
There's a problem with the 8.35.5 drivers. The config file crashes out with an exception error. So I've removed those drivers and I'm back to looking for Para Support in my kernel.

Okay, went back to trying the 8.35.5 drivers. I did the aticonfig --initial --input=/etc/X11/xorg.conf and...

Code: Select all

Uninitialised file found, configuring.

Thoughts and opinions? 8.35.5 just not stable yet? I'm unable to find the paravirtualization section to remove in the kernel, which is why I went back to trying to get these drivers to work.

Alright Gentoo fans, I think I've got it. My video performance is much better. Here's what I did wrong.

In following the Gentoo ATI HowTo, I used the line

/opt/bin/aticonfig --initial --input=/etc/X11/xorg.conf

Which gave me the big long error in my previous post when executed while X and KDE were running. When executed with X and KDE not running, as specified in the HowTo, it simply gave me a Segmentation Fault error and dumped me back to the command prompt.

It was as simple as removing the --input=/etc/X11/xorg.conf from my aticonfig line. It used /etc/X11/xorg.conf as the default location for the xorg.conf and proceeded to modify it successfully.

Thanks everyone for your time!

Thanks, worked for me, too.

BTW, please mark the problem as solved by adding "[SOLVED]" to the thread title.
