For debugging messages, please use the --debug option.
Debugging messages may help finding a solution to your problem.
If you intend to send any error or debug messages to the gphoto
developer mailing list <gphoto-devel@lists.sourceforge.net>, please run
gphoto2 as follows:

    env LANG=C gphoto2 --debug --debug-logfile=my-logfile.txt -PR

Please make sure there is sufficient quoting around the arguments.
I use gphoto version 2.3.1 and libgphoto version 2.3.1-r4, kernel 2.6.17.13

Any ideas on what to do?

It works in windows with the same hardware.

I got the same problems and there were caused by the ehci module (not only the camera but most of my usb devices). It used to work with kernel 2.6.15. When removing the ehci module , everything was working fine, without usb 2. I have recently upgraded to kernel 2.6.20 and everything started working again.

As a work around, between the two kernel version, I used the camera in mass storage mode, but it did not fixed the problem for my scanner that was giving similar error.
