Rebuilding the ATI drivers does not work. It's failing because module has had it's versioning changed (7.1.0 to 1.3.0), and so the fglrx module will not load due the module version mismatch.

Not sure of a way around it, until ATI release an updated driver to use the new versioning.

There is a newer version of ati-drivers available. You will have to download it manually.
I have also downgraded to your version. That happened yesterday.

I mask the package unstable and forget it.

You're right. I've always hated the mess that using the ATI's drivers is. I'm sure it's pretty much the same with Nvidia's too.

I wish there was a decent alternative. I need a new video card soon, and I'm tempted to get an old one that I know is fully supported 2d/3d with the Xorg drivers. I don't game so I don't really care about fps.

I fooled the ati driver to think I am running xorg 7.1, this will work fine as long as no other package depends on the xorg version number! I just patched the xorg version!

Please note that this is a workaround, the only test I performed was running fgl_fglxgears.

Also, I am running ati-drivers-8.36.5

I'm not saying there is a need. For me I set my entire system to unstable about 5 years ago and it would probably be a bit painful having to go back. This was before you could set particular packages to be unstable, and the only place you could set the variable was in make.conf. I very rarely have problems, and I update at least once a week. However, unless there is something you need in unstable, then it's best to stick to stable.

My system that runs MythTV and serves as my main HTPC runs stable, and is only updated very, very rarely, and very, very carefully...

As for the original problem; did you just try reemerging ati-drivers and/or running update-modules? I -only- receive that module versioning error when I've updated my kernel version but haven't rebuilt the module yet, or if I've done some updates but have not run update-modules yet.

Hello, I'm using live Xorg form git (using r300-driver overlay) and applyed this changes (there aren't in the same line in live configure.ac so i made my patch)
But Starting Xgl with fglrx says:

Like the last patch, can I patch to get ABI major server/fglrx equal?

As I experienced similar problems with NVIDA: The current *Beta* drivers are building against new X.org-Server Version, with AIGLX working fine. But it may take some time until it gets stable...
