You usually let a program (application) create the files for you. What kind of file are you trying to create?

im trying to setup openvpn and one of the forums i'm following says it needs a local.conf file in /etc/openvpn/gateway
i had to create the directory gateway, and i have no idea where the local.conf file should come from

if you can help me with removing openvpn and then re emerging and making everything run correctly, i would be greatful

You can create a file with

Code: Select all

touch name_of_file
but that won't do you any good cause it only creates an empty file.

The real question is: What content to put in the file?

Obviously "local.conf" is a textfile used for configuration. That means you have to put in something like

Code: Select all

setting1=value1
setting2=value2
http://openvpn.net/howto.html should tell you what to do.

In most cases, just cd to the directory and type:

nano <name of file>. Or if you would rather use a gui, any text editor that can save plain-text should be able to do it.
I'm too lazy to keep this stupid signature up to date, so here's something more interesting:
