GWN delay

  • Quote

Post by Rafael Pinto » Fri Oct 27, 2006 2:50 pm

For the last 2 or 3 years, Gentoo Weekly Newsletter was always published on each Monday, but for around 2 months now, GWN is arriving later in the week.

I don't think it is a huge problem, but you guys could change to "Week of xx/xx/xxx", just to look nicer!

and/or have the release date to be the 'true' one. It seems to be somewhat strange to have GWN published on 'real' 26th but the relase date itself reads as 23th. Happend a lot lately, starting with one day delay and up to 4 days (based on european date).

The published date correspond to the monday of week the GWN is published, to get some consistency in the naming.
Lately, Ulrich Plate could not take care of the GWN anymore (I don't know why or any details)
Chris Gianelloni took up the GWN but he's really busy. That's why some came late. But as he mentionned, he does his best according to his schedule to get it in any time, and since he's editor, there has been a GWN each week.
So thanks Chris for your work.

Why is the GWN always late?

  • Quote

Post by ryker » Tue Nov 14, 2006 5:44 am

I was just wondering if anyone knows why the Gentoo Weekly Newsletter is almost always released late and with the wrong date? I mean, the Nov 6th 2006 edition was just posted today Nov 13th, a full week late.
I'm not complaining, just curious. Why not just label it the Nov 13th edition instead of Nov 6th?

/me anxiously awaits the Nov 13th edition, ETA Nov 20th. ;)

If I had to guess, I would say that it is because the creators of GWN are volunteers and have to work for a living. :D

The problem are mostly staffing issues which makes it rather difficult to get it out in time. Afaik the GWN team is also looking for people willing to help out a bit.
Dinosaur week! (Ok, this thread is so last week)

I understand that they are volunteers and need more help, and I'm thankful that they contribute their time and effort to help Gentoo. I'm just curious why they always put the wrong date on the newsletter. That's fine if it's a week late because they are short handed. But why not put the correct date on it. Even the 'last updated' date shows the wrong date.

hi,

yet i'm not 100% exactly sure that this is not a problem with my mailserver, i think i just got the newsletter from 16.April. Since this is the latest gwn i got, i would suppose it's not my problem.
This would be at least a 2 weeks delay, is that normal?

Yes, this is normal. That's why this thread and many others have been created. If you've had a chance to read the latest GWN, the first thing in it is a request for help with the GWN. So if anyone feels they have a little bit of free time they would like to donate to the GWN, please do so. I want my WEEKLY GWN back! :)

Is there a location where i can see what exactly is needed? I mean it can't be missing writers, because i can read the gwn on gentoo.org, but until i get the mail (in english) it took about 2 weeks...
On a sidenote: does anyone know how many subscribers the gwn has?

GWN 16 April wrote:GWN seeking more writers

It is once again time for the GWN to start recruiting more writers. As you may have noticed, the GWN has been rather thin the last few weeks and it has had a hard time getting published on time. In an attempt to try to alleviate the problems with the GWN, the staff is seeking more writers from the community to help write for the GWN. To become a GWN writer, you only need to be able to write in English and pay attention on an email alias to assist in creating a cooperative environment between the GWN developer staff and the volunteer writers.

If you're interested in joining the GWN, or even just occasionally writing an article or two, please contact the GWN staff at gwn-feedback@gentoo.org.
