starting firebird (or mozilla) takes several minutes

Hi,

I have installed Firebird 0.6 installed ( I compiled it three times actually )
but it takes about 1-2 Minutes to start. if it is started it behaves just fine, but waiting
a minute for each browser window is something i cant live with.

i tried using mozilla instead, but i encountered the same problem. therefore i think it must be
a problem with one of the dependencies of mozilla and firebird.

what could be the problem and how could it be solved?

thanks in advance

you must be a recent convert to linux. in windows ms has 50-90% of the browser load on boot. (part of why your desktop remains unusable for a few minutes after you finish *booting*)

linux, on the other hand, does not try to shove any particular browser down your throat. so any browser with any amount of size will take a while to load (konq takes a while, galeon, moz, firebird, and so on) the only ones that are fast are ones like dillo, lyx, links, lynx, and so on which are much smaller, but are also capable of a lot less...

i hope this explanation made sense to you.

What desktop are you running? Firebird always took a while on my system as well, so I switched over to Opera.

If it's not a problem that is reflected in loading other large programs, I don't know what to tell you with that though.

two valid points, but still, 1-2m dosn't sound very good, takes a maximum of 10s on my antiquated Tbird 1.4Ghz (an this is only the first time, if I start firebird a second time it usually only takes 2-3s).

Yeah . . . it would be just like the tv show. Except somebody would be watching.

i am actually not new to linux.

and as i mentioned it does not take several seconds to load but 2 _Minutes_

i had mozilla as well as pheonix as well as firebird running on 4 different debian systems.
i know that they take a while to load but 2 minutes is defenitly inacceptable.
the computer i have installed gentoo is a pentium4 1800, 512MB so a slow system can not
be the cause of the problem. at this point i am running a debian (woody) and gentoo on that
machine and the debian firebird "fires"-up in about 5 seconds. on another of my machines
which runs debian as well it is even faster.

by the way, i didnot specify any critical compiler options that could be the cause. i even installed
a new gentoo, because i thought that playing with the compile options messed the system up.
but after the new installation the problem is still there.

right now i am using windowmaker as desktop, as i didn't have hab time to install gnome.
i don't think, however, that this could be the source of the problem as all mozilla/firebird/phoenix run smoothly on the same machine on the debian system under windowmaker. please correct me if i am wrong

another thing: when issuing the firebird command. there is short activity on the CPU, proc and the harddisk, but after just 2 seconds there is no activity whatsoever. so the problem is not loading stuff from harddisk or using all the CPU.

i have checked the startscripts and they are not the reason

cheers
ovid

This is an exact solution to your problem, however I thought I'd mention Epiphany and Galeon (if you use Gnome). I use to use mozilla, but the desktop integration and the fact that it takes so long to long and is clunky, I switched to Galeon, however I find Epiphany is even better at the desktop integration and speed issues.

They both use the Mozilla Gecko engine but they don't have the weighty interface that takes a half hour to load.

I only actually open up Mozilla if I'm going to use the composer.

i dunno, i've never actually timed how long it took me to load firebird, but i have a 933 coppermine p3 and i wouldn't give it to take more than 10-15 seconds MOST of the time, sometimes it'll take around a minute or more if i am compiling stuff in the background (i often have 2 or 3 compiles/emerges going in the background as i work and i have my compile options set to use as many system resources as it deems useful and i have available...)

hope you get things going nicely soon... i really have never really cared, once the browser is open, opening new tabs is very quick, and i only ever use tabbed browsing, and i tend to open my browser as soon as i start my xfree session... i dunno why i haven't just added it to my Autostart folder... just been too lazy i guess :P
