when i use the closed source drivers and configure everything with ati-config, X takes almost forever too load, runs damn slow and even if i exit X, the whole system takes almost 10 minutes to restart (intel core 2 duo, 4gb ram !). any suggestions ?

Hi. I had until 1 month ago an ati card. I noticed the same slow startup especially in kde, the tray apps took ages to load. I though it was my configuration or i did something wrong when i compiled the kde packages. Guess what? After I changed that ati card with a gf 6600, right after installing the driver for it, when i logged in everything started working as it should. My advice is that if ati(read amd) does not release some real drivers, change that card for a nvidia. Yes, they're closed source, but at least they do what they should.

Can you put your X log somewhere we can have a look?
My emerge --info
Have you run revdep-rebuild lately? It's in gentoolkit and it's worth a shot if things don't work well.
