In firefox, go to Edit->Preferences, select the Content tab, then click Manage. Find the JNLP file type, and click Change Action. Click browse and find the javaws executable inside whichever JRE you want to use (usually in the bin directory). Then, try the link again.

What JREs and/or JDKs do you have installed?

If you just want to be able to run java webstart (and other java programs), then sun-jre-bin is probably the one you want. Once it's installed, the javaws executable will be in /opt/sun-jre-bin-1.5.0.10/bin (the version number may vary).

After installing the JRE, did you set the file handler for JNLP files again?

What choices do you get when you click on a webstart link?

I am having the same problem. PDF is the only file type I have in the manage content panel and there is no option to create/add a new filetype :(.

This thread solved the problem for me. It would still be nice though if you could manually add applications to seamlessly handle content in the Firefox configuration.

Howdy.
I have similar problem with running Java Web Stard under Opera and Konqueror [in Firefox it's even worse because it CRASHES on every Java applet etc. but up to now noone could help me with that ;/].
In each of these browsers, when I click the JWS button, it shows a little dialog, tries to download something and then it shows me an error. When I switch to "Details" tab, there is a following error message:

Code: Select all

The application has requested a version of the Java 2 platform (JRE) that is currently not locally installed. Java Web Start was unable to automatically download and install the requested version. The JRE version must be installed manually.

Error Code 11 (11 Could not locate requested version) returned from server when accessing resource: (http://java.sun.com/products/autodl/j2se, 1.6+)
I have sun-jdk-1.6.0.07 package installed and working, so it's kinda strange. Why my browsers doesn't see it for JWS and use it without problems [except Firefox ;P] for ordinary applets? :|
