[solved] rxvt-unicode + screen very slow

Recently app-misc/screen inside urxvt-unicode has become very slow. I can see how it is redrawing ncurses applications line by line. If I run the same applications without screen then they redraw fast. If run them inside screen that is inside xterm, they also redraw fast. It seems that the combination of screen and urxvt is somehow suspicious.

Another thing is that I no longer see the status messages from screen. It seems that something is wrong with my current config of inverse video in urxvt or screen. However this did not happen before, and I had not changed anything, except perhaps for an upgrade that I do not remember.

Andrzej

PS. And a side remark: I was trying to search the forums on "screen rxvt-unicode" or "app-misc/screen" , however the keyword filter consistently distorts my queries. I was not able to get any meaningful result. That mechanism that should sanitize your queries, seems to be doing exactly the opposite. Am I missing some obvious way to overcome it?

Can't help you with screen && urxvt (i use urxvt though, but not screen), but you can try searching through google. give the query as "screen rxvt-unicode site:forums.gentoo.org"

I have seen that others see the same problem elsewhere: http://lists.schmorp.de/pipermail/rxvt- ... 00364.html

It seems that precisely the combination of screen and the new urxvt is slow.

I am using rxvt-unicode 8.1, but upgrading to current testing 8.2 helps only slightly :( (so it could be subjective).

In any case scren in xterm is much much faster than in urxvt (which brags about being fast).

EDIT: the problem is actually solved on 8.2. After using it a bit, it seems that the performance is acceptable, albeit still visibly slower than with screen and xterm.

Perhaps if you do not use xft fonts, you will have a slightly faster urxvt.

I am sure that would help, but I am not willing to compromise here. After all xterm works with the same fonts and is faster.
