Dual P3 733 and a single P3 1ghz, each with 512MB of ram. The 1ghz machine is my current server, the dual 733 one will be, once I finish getting LinuxBIOS up and running on it :D Oh, and btw, both of those machines distcc with each other, my modestly overclocked A64 3500+ (with a gig of ddr), and my sempron 2400+ laptop, when it's available.

I recently installed Gentoo on my home computer:

Pavilion, Pentium 4, 3.6 GHz
1536 MB RAM
GeForce 7800 GTX

Everything has gone really smooth so far. And the compile times are insanely good. :P

Too bad the damn thing had a Sound Blaster X-Fi. I will need to replace that.

DUAL (DUAL CORE) Opteron

Win-Enterprises mb06068 MotherBoard w/ 2 dual core opterons 16G ram + linuxbios to boot.

11 second boot to shell, 20 second boot to full running kde.
Absolutely flawless. boot sequence and extremely fast.

It is fun watching gkrellm display 4 cores while running mprime &
watching large compiles chunk object files @ 5-6/sec at a time.

graphics are amazingly smooth w/ 3 1900x1200 lcds... I never knew what rss-screensavers
were supposed to look like.

everyone needs a 4 core machine.

I just built this machine a week ago:

Intel Core 2 Quad @ 2.4Ghz
MSI 975X Powerup Edition motherboard
4GB DDR800, 4-4-4-12 timings (running 2GB at the moment as one of the sticks I bought failed memtest and I am awaiting the RMA)
GeForce 8800 GTS 320MB
Samsung SyncMaster 244T 24" LCD
EMU 1212m soundcard (no linux drivers for the analog outputs unfortunately)
Antec 550w power supply and case (No flashing lights here, just solid construction)

I call it "Hydra" because of the quad core processor.

I installed Gentoo on one of my friend's Home-Desktop:

Dual Xeon with Hyperthreading (makes 4 Cores) @ 2GHz, Some ATI Radeon and 2 GB Ram.
I never thought compiling Xorg could be so fast.

Hyperthreading doesnt count as 2 cores :P

This machine i built back in Oct2005:

2.00GHz Pentium M (clocked to 2.5ghz)
AOpen i915GMm-HFS mobo
1GB DDR533 3-3-3-10 (soon to be 2GB DDR667 4-4-4-12)
Radeon x600 Pro (was free, soon to be Geforce 7950GT)
17" Samsung 172x LCD (Soon to be 24" Dell 2407fp)
2x500GB WD5000YS (raid edition drives) in RAID0
external Sound Blaster mp3+ (since the hda-intel drivers cant really do digital passthrough)

And I DistCC this with a 1.6GHz Pentium 4.

Intel Core 2 Quad

  • Quote

Post by rbr28 » Fri Jul 13, 2007 1:41 am

I had to post as I'm currently waiting on a quad core ordered this week. This is for a new workstation of mine at work (I'd never spend the money for my home machine). I do a lot of compiling, and work with virtual machines a good bit, so I plan to really take advantage of the quad core. My config is below and I'll post information on how the install goes, and performance, in the next couple weeks.

Asus P5K motherboard
Intel Q6600 Core 2 Quad 2.4
Enermax Infiniti 650w power supply
XFX Nvidia 8600 GTS Video card, 256MB, dual DVI
NEC 22" 5ms LCD, and older 19" NEC LCD in dual monitor setup
Crucial Ballistic DDR2 1066Mhz 4x1GB chips
3 Western Digital 250GB 7200rpm 16MB cache drives
Lite-On 20x DVD burner
Lian-Li Aluminum tower (from an older system)

I had a $2000 limit and the system came in at about 1900 with keyboard, mouse, and a second 1GB Intel NIC (I'm on gigabit lines at work). I'm planning to use software raid, which is about as good as any of the garbage vendors claim to be onboard hardware raid.

I tried installing Gentoo on a work quad Itanium2 9050/8GB RAM rackmount, but failed. The boot disk failed to boot the machine. Had to get the machine up fast, so I had to use SuSE... :( Kind of weird looking at a 16-thread system...

Howz about a Sun Enterprise M4000 topped out? 4 proc (8 cores each = 32 corex2.15 Ghz) 128 GB ram. Attached are 2 Sun StorageTek 2530 arrays with 36 x 300GB SAS drives connected via dual fibre channel Sun branded Emulex lp10000-dc HBAs... that's a total of 21.6 TB of storage :-)

Gentoo power..

See sig.
P4 3.0GHz HT is the most powerful.

Most interesting is probably a "Pay To Use" internet kiosk in the Riviera at DefCon 15 this year. No BIOS password and boot from CD as the first boot option. We put Ubuntu on a couple others to save time.
Macbook Core2Duo 1GB/120GB SATA - Gentoo/OS X
AMD Athlon64 3000+ 1GB DDR400 1.5TB - Gentoo
Intel P4 3.0GHz, 1GB DDR400, .75TB - Gentoo
Sun Netra t1 500mHz UltraSPARC IIe - Gentoo
3 x SGI Indy R4600 - Irix 5.2 / Gentoo
