emerge world broken -- SOLVED

  • Quote

Post by sheepdog » Sun Mar 11, 2007 12:35 pm

I'm told this isn't a circular dependency, although it looks circular to me. At any rate, I have been unable to resolve it by removing a lot of packages and masking a lot of packages. Any suggestions, please?

Code: Select all

goliath ~ # emerge -upDt world

These are the packages that would be merged, in reverse order:

I've had a gentoo system up and running for two weeks and have been able to solve about every problem, but the beryl-whitescreen issue--which isn't important--and a similar important issue about emergeing kdm. The response to emerge kdm -pv:
These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

I too would like some hints on how to resolve this issue, so I can use kdm.

Managed to get everything except kdelibs to emerge by adding the following to /etc/portage/package.mask:

Code: Select all

>=kde-base/kdelibs-3.5.5-r9
Still seems to be a circular dependency between kdelibs and kde-env.

Blocking means that a package can't coexist with another..... In this particular case a package's name has changed (Because of a major kde change I guess... I'm a gnome guy) kinda like xorg 6.9 (monolithic) to xorg 7 (modular) there were lots of new package names! Portage does not really know what to do here... it can't uninstall package a-r1 and install package a-r2 because package a is now called or broken up into ab-r3 ac-r3 ad-r3.... Get it? (sorry I suck at explaining things)

The easiest thing to do here is "emerge -C" everything that has a B by it, and then:

Code: Select all

emerge -NDu world
There are some precautions when the blocking packages are things like pam/shadow (which could render the system useless if the new version fails to install) but this shouldn't be a worry here. (use quickpkg if you really need to backup your current version)

@sheepdog: You will have an outdated kde.eclass in one of your overlays. Don't use overlays, which come with eclasses shading the ones provided by the Gentoo repository provided eclasses or follow changes closely and adapt your local eclasses accordingly.

@actaea: You already have kdm installed as part of the kdebase ebuild. When you want to use the split KDE ebuilds, you have to unmerge the monolithic couterparts before.
Please make sure that you have searched for an answer to a question after reading all the relevant docs.

Removing the entire overlay directory does not correct the problem:

Code: Select all

goliath ~ # emerge -upND kdelibs
!!! Invalid PORTDIR_OVERLAY (not a dir): '/usr/local/portage'

Drop into a tty, stop xdm, unmerge the old blockers, and emerge kde-meta

Emerging kde-meta would take several days. Last time I tried it it didn't work anyway. That doesn't seem practical. Faster to switch to Ubuntu.

Thanks, Carlo and iphands. I feel kind of dumb about not getting what Carlo pointed out about kdm already being installed, but still I was able to use iphand's answer to solve an unrelated portage issue.

Actually, it's possible to do it in stages. I.e. remove one of the monoliths and substitute the -meta build. I did this on my gf's pc and she never even found out.

you have no choice but to unmerge the blocking packages. bite the bullet and do it. if it really takes several days, then yes you probably should be using a binary based distribution.

Umm if updating requires rebuilding kde-meta... then either rebuild or don't update. Right?

Oh and a blocking package does not mean at all that "emerge is broken". It means that emerge is working properly! :D

You're better off with kde-meta to avoid headaches like this in the future, it might take awhile, but it'll be worth it in the long run.

Note that you can use --buildpkgonly and --usepkgonly to minimize the time that you do not have the binaries installed. Do this:

Code: Select all

# emerge --buildpkgonly some-modular-package
# emerge --unmerge blocking-monolithic-equivalent
# emerge --usepkgonly some-modular-package
The first command builds the package, but does not install it. Since the package is not being installed, a blocker does not affect it at this stage. The second command pulls out the blocker. The third command installs the package built by step one. Since --usepkgonly is an untar operation + metadata updates, it is very fast even for relatively large packages. Thus, you are only lacking that package during the time window between step two and step three, which is on the order of seconds or minutes. Note that you could specify multiple packages in any of these steps, so you could even take the opportunity to switch to modular KDE at the same time (as opposed to installing the meta packages that drag in all the modules).

Then why is it possible to install KDE packages without installing all of kde-meta? Documentation says this:
If you want to have even more control on what parts of KDE you install, you have the possibility to install just the single KDE applications that you need.
It doesn't say, "But if you do it could break your emerge, so just use kde-meta." Following the documentation should not break emerge.

solved

Here's how I solved this problem:

kdelibs and kde-env show circular dependencies, because a) kde-env is now part of kdelibs and, b) something is depending on kde-env. So
1) find everything depending on kde-env and remove them.
2) remove kde-env,
3) re-emerge everything previously removed.

All of this took about an hour, once I figured out how to do it. Turns out there was no ebuild for guitoo so left that out.

I like Gentoo and it has great tools. But I often have difficulty figuring out how to use them to get my problem solved. It still does little to assist the user when things are not automatic.

In this case, it would have been entirely possible for the system to have at least told me the above 3 steps. Preferrably, it should have just done it on its own.

Code: Select all

goliath ~ # equery d kde-env
[ Searching for packages depending on kde-env... ]
