gcc 4.1.1-r3 issue

Hi. I'm still quite new to gentoo so any help here would be appreciated. Everytime I try to emerge a package, say samba, it fails with a gcc 4.1.1-r3 issue.

Try reverting mozilla-firefox to the 1.5 branch from 2.0.0.2 and see if that does anything. I don't know why that worked for me. I had been using 2.0.0.2.

David, you've lost me on that one.

Out of curiosity in my make.conf file I have 19 options in my USE entry but in the emerge --info one in my above post it shows about 57, a lot of which are irrelevant to my machine. I was under the impression that the USE entry in make.conf was the one gentoo used so where's all these others come from?

the other ones come from /etc/profile.
If you lower your CFLAGS does it output the same error?

I'll give that a go and get back to you when it completes (it's a slow embedded machine)... also just had a quick look at /etc/profile but couldn't see any USE related info in there...

Have you recently emerge binutils, gcc or glibc ? I think that gcc needs to be emerged again.

I've had a go at emerging binutils and glibc, both installed without error. However emerging gcc-4.1.1-r3 (or even any package that needs it) just hits the error '-msecure-plt not supported by your assembler'

Anyone got any further ideas to get past this?

Can you post the output of

Does this help?

I'm getting the idea that you're missing glibc...

In your very first output line of emerge --info it's saying 'unavailable', where your glibc-version should be standing. For example this is my first emerge --info line:

Also, in your above quoted 'emerge -pDv gcc' output, emerge flags glibc-2.5 as 'new' (N)...

Please try the following:

And after that:

emerge =sys-devel/gcc-3.4.4-r1

In the 2nd command i printed an exact version, because i wouldn't recommend upgrading gcc at this point (because gcc 4.1.1 is the current stable version, it wants to install that one by default).

Afterwards retry emerging a package like samba

As far as I know, any error dealing with the assembler is an issue caused by as, which is part of the binutils package. Maybe you should try reverting to an older version of binutils? Also, make sure you're not installing a version of binutils that's still undergoing testing.

Hi Stern, I'll try anything to get this working. How do I revert to an older version of binutils? Don't forget I'm still learning gentoo...

Hm i've been comparing your CFLAGS (from /etc/make.conf) with the suggested ones on the safe cflags page. For PowerPC 603e it suggest this:

CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"

This differs from your current CFLAGS and CXXFLAGS. You could try editing your /etc/make.conf file accordingly, then retry the emerge commands from my previous post (with --nodeps). It might work

I had the same error moving to gcc-4.1.1 about a year ago. I did something I don't recommend, added -mlong-double-128 to my CFLAGS and used the bootstrap script in portage to rebuild the toolchain. I've been told that -mlong-double-128 might cause problems and so far only one package needed that filtered.

Okay, had a go with your suggestions but still no luck - crashes out on the 'configure: error: this configuration requires -mlong-double-128 IBM extended format support'

The CFLAGS originally were '-O2 -mcpu=603e -pipe -fno-strict-aliasing -fsigned-char' so I tried adding back in the '-fno-strict-aliasing' and the '-fsigned-char' and trying again after each but with the same error.

Stern suggests trying an older 'binutils'. Can someone indicate how I'd do this please as I may as well give it a go. Thanks for everyones help so far on this baffling case.

Edit: Okay, I've had a search around and found the config for binutils and it's set for/using version 2.16.1. There's also a reference to a version 2.17 in /etc/env.d/binutils/
