Firefox hard freezes system

I've had a problem for close to a year now, but it's been happening more often recently so I need to solve it... firefox hard freezes my system. It doesn't matter if I'm using normal kde or beryl, so it's not that (I normally run beryl) but beyond the fact that firefox is open & often a flash animation is running, I cannot track down the source of the problem. I'm on amd64, and have tried several full compiles as well as the binary version with & without flash, and it still freezes. This isn't just X freezing - established ssh sessions time out, and the machine does not respond to a ping. It does not reset itself. I don't know enough about system logs to find anything helpful.

Beyond what they recommend in the install guide, I haven't set up logging before and I have a feeling I'll need to in order to figure out what's going on. Can anyone suggest other methods of determining what might be the problem? I'm stuck.

Could it be hardware-related? Are you working as root or normal user?

I haven't noticed any other hardware problems. I've run it as both root and my normal user, with by now several user profile resets.
