Dual boot Gentoo with W-XP & unable to detect SATA Drive

Should I install Windows XP first before Gentoo or the other way around? Coz I've been reading about how Windows not detecting other OS already installed messing up your other OS something like that.

Any recommendations?

I'd go with windows first.

It won't overwrite gentoo - but it would overwrite the bootloader - although you can always boot from cd to fix that.

you can do it either way, but doing windows first is easier because, as said earlier, you don't have to reinstall the bootloader. Not that it's difficult. Use a boot disk to get to linux and run as root, grub-install /dev/hda or whatever your hard drive is.

well, it looks like its detected. did you try both /dev/sdx and /dev/hdx? sometimes it gets marked as a scsi drive (sd). how about a dmesg?

reboot and when syslinux kicks in type "gentoo doscsi" instead of hitting enter or entering gentoo.

I had this problem too. Try this.

1. Go into your BIOS.
2. Go to Integrated Peripherals or something like that.
3. Change IDE/SATA Ctrl or something like that to "AHCI".
4. Save and exit.
5. When starting Gentoo, type "gentoo all-generic-ide".

Sorry this also did not work. After typing gentoo all-generic-ide, after two lines it hanged.

I tried Ubuntu and Kubuntu and their GUI installer detected my Sata drive. I think I'll try this distro over Gentoo for the meantime though my first choice is really Gentoo.

I dunno which kernel is on the boot CD for gentoo; I recently had to configure an Asus box, and the first kernel I tried on it (compiled on a different machine) didn't detect the SATA controller - the new gentoo boot CD did. However, when I built a xen kernel, that failed again, so the patch has gone in since 2.6.16, I guess.

I had to patch the xen kernel to get it to detect the drives.

Unfortunately the machine is at work, and I'm now at home, so I can't remember the patch. I found it on the lkml, though.

Are you using the latest gentoo boot CD?

Yes I think I have the latest one. I download from here(http://www.gentoo.org/main/en/where.xml) just 5 days ago.

May I ask you whether you got a Medion MD 8818 computer? In this case you should change the SATA option in the BIOS from 'IDE' to 'RAID' and your SATA harddisk should be detected. Drawback is that you cannot boot into XP anymore. There is obviously a problem with the VIA chipset P4M890 under Linux; Google pointed me to some discussions on (mainly German) message boards dealing with this problem.
