(If you're running 4.2.*, there aren't any icons: they're new!)
Of course it was 4.4, i used 4.2 for a long time.
Re-merging 4.4 solved the problem.

Note to XFCE packagers: Would you please make the dependency on virtual/fam optional, contingent upon the fam USE flag? Otherwise, gamin is automatically pulled, which is unwanted by many (refer to gam_server issues).

Please open a bug report for those kind of notes or add your note to an already existing report. You can't expect that the maintainer of Xfce are reading all this threads and posts.

xfce-base/thunar-0.8.0-r2
xfce-extra/thunar-volman-0.1.2
xfce-base/xfdesktop-4.4.0-r3

no change though :? i can't select any option other then "none" or "mimized application icons"

Hi!

I have the exact same versions, with those USE flags:

xfce-base/xfdesktop thunar-vfs plugins
xfce-base/thunar plugins

And I have the desktop icons...

Hi,

When I click a link in a random app on desktop #1, it opens a tab in firefox which was on desktop #2, and also puts firefox on desktop #1.

People on freenode/#xfce told me this was a bug and not a configurable option, did anyone stumble upon it?

Yes, I noticed this too. This is new since 4.4. Also a save of the settings when logging off, does not work anymore as expected. When logging back in all windows are put in one (1) workplace/desktop in stead of where they where.

i'd like to see this fixed soon as it's really annoying when opening links from outside firefox

Looks like it's gone for me after I unchecked "Remember and recall previous workspace when switching via keyboard shortcuts", in WM Tweaks / Workspaces.

A dumb question, what initscript do you use? And should I delete xdm from my startup? Didn't find anything in the documentation
TIA
I use xdm, I changed /etc/conf.d/xdm to startup slim instead of gdm :)
For whatever reason SLiM isn't cooperating with me. All of my config files look good, SLiM loads like its supposed to (at least appears to) the X server doesn't complain and when I login as a user or as root.....the nvidia driver gets reloaded and SLiM magically reappears. All I want is for xfce to start when I enter my name and password :x startx works fine, so the problem isn't in the xfce4.4 installation (i don't think)

I've changed my .xinitrc file to everything conceivable; I even copied the system default into the users home directory, which caused SLiM not to return until I restarted xdm. I used portage overlays for the ebuilds found here (1.2.5-r1) without any errors. I'm at my wits end on this, but I really don't want to have to install all the dependencies that gdm/kdm/entrance would require. Any ideas? Or even just a post of a working slim.conf and .xinitrc?

So I've found something that sort of bothers me about the xfwm4 compositor. If I run glxgears with no compositing, I get around 13000fps, with xfwm4 compositing I get ~600. However if I use beryl I get around ~6000. It just seems off to me that the 2d compositor in window manager for a "light weight" DE would use more resources than beryl.

I have toggled this flag and saved a session. Next time I logged in all was back to normal! Thanks for the tip.

psycho3d, can you try to check it again and save the session, logout and log back in?

I was having some problems with slim as well. When I would log in it would just (or so I thought) sit there and not do anything. Well, I accidentally left-clicked, and to my surprise slim had actually loaded twm instead of what I had set as the default session name (xfce4). so, I quickly realized the problem was that if I didn't set a session with F1, slim was sending an empty string to my ~/.xinitrc, so a quick modification was this:

Code: Select all

case $1 in
xfce4)
    exec startxfce4
    ;;
"")
    exec startxfce4
    ;;
dwm)
    exec dwm
    ;;
*)
    exec twm
    ;;
esac
Notice the 2nd part of the case, this catches an empty string as input and launches startxfce4 anyway

Why won't xfce 4.4 show up in portage?

  • Quote

Post by Travis86 » Sun Feb 25, 2007 12:43 am

I think this is a simple question. I've read that xfce 4.4 is out, and I want to try it. But, it won't show up in portage.

Code: Select all

# emerge --sync
... all that ...
# emerge -s xfce4
...
*  xfce-base/xfce4
      Latest version available: 4.2.3.2
      Latest version installed: 4.2.3.2
      Size of files: 0 kB
      Homepage:      http://www.xfce.org/
      Description:   Xfce 4 base ebuild
      License:       GPL-2 BSD LGPL-2
...
Why doesn't the latest version show up as 4.4?

Merged above post.

The reason you are not seeing xfce 4.4 is because it is currently marked ~arch. If you want to emerge it, add entries to /etc/portage/package.keywords like these, and then portage should detect it.

Try installing the dep tool.... it gives you a better description of all the different versions available. eix does the same, but in a more emerge-like syntax.

Sorry if this has been answered/posted before, but I've been trying to setup thunar-volman to automount disks and usb drives and I seem to have everything setup correctly but when I click on the cdrom within thunar i get an error as follows:

Code: Select all

Failed to mount "WoWDisc1".
A security policy in place prevents this sender from sending this message to this recipient, see message bus configuration file (rejected message had interface "org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Volume" member "Mount" error name "(unset)" destination "org.freedesktop.Hal").
I'm assuming it has something to do with hal.conf but I'm not sure what. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Make sure your user is in the plugdev group, if not add them: 'gpasswd -a <user> plugdev'.

Actually I use BMPx for audio playback and Thoggen for ripping DVD's. Both take advantage of the GStreamer framework. So now I'm looking for a good video frontend (based on GStreamer) to get rid of xine/mplayer (including their libs and dependencies).

Totem looks nice, but depends on some of these (ugly) gnome libs. Does some of you have a hint for an alternate (GStreamer based) video player?

Thanks in advance.

Anyways, as progress is made all the time:

is there any estimate for when xfce4.4 will be marked 'stable'?
I know there still is some work done and I wouldn't be off too well breaking our work-boxes because of maybe screwing dependencies or like.
