Dual booting Vista and Gentoo, Grub error

  • Quote

Post by G2k » Wed Feb 14, 2007 8:55 pm

I just installed Vista and booted into Gentoo to get grub reinstalled into the MBR. I'm getting this error when I try to boot into Vista

Code: Select all

root (hd0,0)
Filesystem type unknown, partition type 0x7
savedefault
Error 15: File not found
and this is my grub.conf

Code: Select all

title=Windows Vista
root (hd0,0)
savedefault
makeactive
chainloader +1
fdisk -l

Code: Select all

Disk /dev/hda: 80.0 GB, 80026361856 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 9729 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hda1 * 1 7771 62420526 7 HPFS/NTFS
/dev/hda2 7772 7775 32130 83 Linux
/dev/hda3 7776 7808 265072+ 82 Linux swap / Solaris
/dev/hda4 7809 9729 15430432+ 83 Linux
This page says that the problem occurs if the BIOS and Linux "see" different disk geometries AND the Windows partition is larger than about 8 GB (more precisely: if the first hard disk partition ends on cylinder 1024 or beyond this point).
I am not too sure how they suggest to solve this
One quick solution is to activate the (LBA or large) access mode (under which the hard disk was previously addressed) for the hard disk(s) in the computer's BIOS. Important: the hard disk values should not be set to "AUTO".
I can't really remember how to access the BIOS  and I don't understand what the "Important" part means...
any suggestions of better workarounds?
Thanks!

To access your computers BIOS, during startup, you usually press "Del". If you bought an OEM machine and didn't build your computer, the manufacturers may have disabled your BIOS, so you won't be able to get in there at all.

Also, if it isn't the "Del" key, then the POST screen should say somewhere what it is.

And the "Important" part, I guess in your BIOS, if you have an option for "AUTO", just don't set it to that (the other option would probably be "Manual").

Suse seemed to offer an option but the file they are referring to no longer exists. *sad face*

Please try the following:

Code: Select all

rootnoverify (hd0,0)
makeactive
chainloader +1
edit: included proper grub entry

tried with rootnoverify already, it didn't work

At this point I'm afraid that even if I reinstall Windows XP (just to have a working Windows partition) it would give me the same error...I don't think it's Vista itself...

wohooo!!! I got it!!!! I have no clue, I just guessed and I got it! *dances* I'm now in Vista
All I did was add
map (hd0) (hd0)
map (hd0) (hd0)
I have no idea why this worked. But it did. Once I boot back into Gentoo I'll post my complete grub.conf in case someone else finds it useful :D

Too little too late, but:

WIndows HAS to be one of the first partitions (well, THE first). What you did was fool it into thinking "Hey, I'm #1!"

but do I need both
map (hd0) (hd0)
map (hd0) (hd0)
or is that redundant? Basically, is there a cleaner way?
By the way, Vista is horrible I would never suggest it. Sluggish and ugly and I have a fast computer...

EDIT:
It wasn't worth the hassle to get Grub to load Vista...it's such a piece of trash, in 7 years Micro$oft has done very little it's unbelievable.

It's documented:

Code: Select all

> info grub
Lookup '13.3.23 map'. Doesn't this work?

Code: Select all

map (hd0) (hd1)
map (hd1) (hd0)
I hear Vista is crap and nags you over the most minor user operations (e.g., cut, paste, save, ...). I still have XP, but all the Office 2007 software is slower for a slightly better user environment. There's also a huge security hole (not Blue Pill) noted recently by Joanna Rutkowska (another one!)

If you have more thoughts on Vista let us know. My work forces me to have an up-to-date Microsoft development box. :(
Cheers,
ND

Oh yeah I have way many more thoughts - I'm installing 2 updates for a total of 202.4 MB! What the hell? Also, I wasn't able to get Firefox installed, I heard that there's a bug with iTunes and Vista that will mess up your iPod and Gaim is ugly under Vista, which pisses me off.
I just installed the OS and 12 Gigs are taken already with just a few programs (Office 2007, msn messenger, daemon tools and Skype...that's literally all I've installed). 12 Gigs! I don't have harddisks coming out of my ar$e

It's just not worth it, I hope most people don't make the change. The only reason why I'm using it is because it supports Skype 3 and typing in other languages such as Japanese isn't such a hassle.
Other than that, stick to Linux
