I have a problem with the extras.

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

I didn't have the xfce-base/xfce4-panel-4.3 on my system.
How to solve this blocker?

Here is my package.keywords:

hmm, do you have the xfce4-extras meta package installed?
if so you can add xfce-base/xfce4-extras to your package.keywords or try to uninstall the old version, IF the extras dont need the meta package ...

This was the solution.

Upgrading path from 4.2 to 4.4.

  • Quote

Post by SamuliSuominen » Tue Feb 06, 2007 9:09 pm

People, there is no point of pasting package.* lists in this post, it's more annoying than useful.

Because 4.2 packages are not compatible with 4.4 at all, easiest way is to remove 4.2 before installing.

emerge --sync
emerge -av portage-utils
emerge -C `qlist -CI xfce`

After it's been removed, it's time to install 4.4.

emerge --sync
grep xfce /usr/portage/profiles/package.mask >> /etc/portage/package.unmask
grep xfce /usr/portage/profiles/package.mask >> /etc/portage/package.keywords
USE="thunar-vfs dbus plugins hal libnotify" emerge -av xfce4 xfce4-extras

USE flags should be added to make.conf accordingly. And currently xfce4-extras doesn't install all of the plugins, so you can look at the list yourself.

grep xfce /usr/portage/profiles/package.mask

A quick note: There is no need to sync two times (after removing 4.2).

You might want to consider /etc/portage/package.use for some of those flags if you don't want them to be global, too :)

Yes, please don't abuse mirrors by syncing too many times. My bad.

That "guide" is now obsolete, I've just unmasked..

Hi!

For the blocking package:

[blocks B ] >=xfce-base/xfce4-panel-4.3 (is blocking xfce-extra/xfce4-minicmd-0.3.0-r1)

The >= atom means that any version higher than 4.3 is blocking. After in the output, will it compile another version of the panel?

Yes. It means that minicmd has been removed from 4.3(beta) and from 4.4. Just unmerge it and continue with your update. minicmd's functionality has been replaced by verve.

I just installed xfce4.4 and I find it pretty good (much more faster AND nicer than my previous gnome).

I used to have a list of wallpapers and a script that was switching them every 1 hour using cron. I wanted to do the same with xfce4 so I just figured out that making a list using the "Desktop Settings" and then running xfdesktop on a terminal would switch randomly wallpapers.

I thought that just putting /usr/bin/xfdesktop in the crontab at the desired intervals would do the trick but actually the wallpapers are not changing. However i've got good evidence that cron is workin' and the following line would eventually show up in /var/log/messages :

Code: Select all

Feb 7 08:11:01 MyLair cron[23669]: (eric) CMD (/usr/bin/xfdesktop)
I obviously overlooked something somewhere, don't know if it's really related to anything xfce4 though, according with my *experience* with the cron deamon....

I hope this wasn't answered earlier in the thread, but does anybody know where to get date codes for orage? I've never had such a hard time setting up a simple clock. I just want it to show HH(12H format not 24):MM AM/PM

When I first installed xfce 4.4, I could click on an archive in Thunar and it would open the archive in Xarchiver. Some packages have been upgraded since then, now it no longer opens the archives when clicking on then in Thunar.

Anyone have any clues?

I wish the maintainers introduce the plugins USE flag for thunar to pull all these in ... (you might want thunar-media-tags and thunar-volman as well).

Introducing that kind of USE flag which only pulls in runtime dependencies is not an option, but instead we have planned creating thunar-plugins meta ebuild.
Why? Because then if you add USE="plugins" it would recompile thunar which is not needed.

Assuming you've set up a backdrops list change the command to

Code: Select all

/usr/bin/xfdesktop -reload
I have mine tied to Control+Shift+* so I can cycle them myself, but I like the idea of adding it to cron. :)

Has anyone else found this problem? I'm not sure how to diagnose a fault as it's hidden behind the splash screen and logging seems limited.

Turn off the splash screen? I don't notice panel load problems even on my ancient hardware, but I only run one panel, and I don't run the splash screen.

Is it just me or do you guys have the 4.4 in package.mask too?
Since it's ~arch now I think it shouldn't be there anymore, right?

Nope, its not in package.mask...

1. Have you synced recently?

2. Is it in /etc/portage/package.mask for some reason?

Tried with vte 0.14.2 which is in portage since only a few hours.. Terminal still slow as usual :?
However i'm doubting vte is really the cause (i was told this by someone of the xfce team), since i installed roxterm, which also depends on vte, and this terminal works very fast. Maybe it doesn't use vte in the same way as Terminal or something, but still odd.

The problem is the terminal or at least the problem is how terminal is using vte - there are two workarounds my patch (problem is you will need to restart terminal if you are switching composior on and off) and benny's advice to turn off compositor extension in xorg.conf - http://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2818

I just installed Xfce 4.4, and it's working great :D

However, I seem to have a problem with thunar-volman.
For some reason, when I insert a disc, it mounts it with uid 400 and gid 401, and permissions only on owner.
However, there does not exist any user with uid 400, or group with 401, so only root will actually have access to it.

Is there any setting needed to make it mount it with the currently logged in user, or with group permissions on plugdev?

Automounting has worked fine before, with Ivman.
