Firefox cannot handle secure pages

Whenever I try to visit a secure (https://) page, I get the following:

Unexpected response from server

Firefox doesn't know how to communicate with the server.

    *   Check to make sure your system has the Personal Security Manager
          installed.

    *   This might be due to a non-standard configuration on the server.

Every secure page gets this. There are no errors printed to console. Creating a new profile with firefox -profilemanager does not help. Removing ~/.mozilla so it may create completely new settings does not help. Doing all this after emerge -e mozilla-firefox does not help.

Any ideas? I haven't found much of anything else on google to try.

Did some searching and found a firefox dependency on nss so you might try re-emerging nss.

Also, maybe run revdep-rebuild -p (then without the -p) to see if there's anything broken.

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, it didn't work (and I hope it would have been done with an emerge -e mozilla-firefox anyway). This is actually really cutting into my productivity on linux, as I use google calendar a lot (requires secure access) and gmail has now logged me out, along with a number of other sites. Are there any other ideas of what might be causing this, or how to solve it?

Where re-emerging dev-libs/nss fixed the problem

that seems to indicate that OpenSSL is a problem and provides the solution of:

* # revdep-rebuild --library libssl.so.0.9.7
* # revdep-rebuild --library libcrypto.so.0.9.7

* After this, you can delete /usr/lib/libssl.so.0.9.7
* and /usr/lib/libcrypto.so.0.9.7
...snip...

The only other thing I can think of for temporary relief is to use Opera and/or the browser supplied with kde/gnome (assuming you are using kde/gnome).

Iv ran into the same issues. Firefox 2.0 was working until it went and screwed up my bookmarks. Couldn't even add anything... Went and reemerged Firefox and bookmarks work, just can't connect to anything that needs SSL.. I did what was said above and nothing... Seamonkey works though..

Hers the weird part though, it works as root O_O

Would have said it sounded like a permissions problem. Glad you fixed it.
