Anybody worked out how to make conky run on the background in Gnome, without there being a fight between it and Nautilus? It wasn't possible a while ago, but I was wondering if anyone had come up with a work around?

Try out with own_window to yes and own_window_type to desktop, it should work

got it, you do need own_window yes but the other flag is own_window_transparent. Thanks, that's bothered me for ages! Desktop looks great now!

Check the FAQ for that. Transparency actually is working, it is just that conky is using the (black) root
pixmap from the window underneath what you see as your desktop.

Try using e.g. 'qiv' to set your root pixmap and then conky should work as expected.

I think that using another program to set wallpaper is just a workaround. Conky worked fine without this few months ago.
What is strange - the fact that I can see black background on my desktop only when connect my system to Internet. When I stop net.ppp0 and restart KDE background under Conkys is OK. When I start my net.ppp0 again (and restart KDE) background goes black again. I can't imagine how rss scripts taken from conky.sourceforge.net can make background black...

With the last update, the $battery started to show remaining capacity in percent, how to change it back to remaining time? or is is possible to diplay both?

Didn't work

The only solution that works for now is to use another app to draw wallpaper, which is option in KDE. But this is not a good option as wallpapaper needs to be redrawn from time to time which does not give a good effect on my desktop...

Once I click on the desktop or any icon there, conky disapears. I'm using gnome with nautilus. It didn't happen before until I upgraded to 1.4.5

Any help will be appreciated.

own_window yes is correct for gnome, but own_window_type desktop is likely the problem.

try:

own_window_type normal
own_window_hints undecorated,below,sticky,skip_taskbar,skip_pager

you can also try:

own_window_type override

which hides conky from the window manager altogether.

Hi,

I would like to know how to get hddtemp to work with conky.
I am trying somthing like this:

You will have to configure sudo with NOPASSWD.

Configure & start /etc/init.d/hddtemp. Conky has hddtemp feature build in, theres no need to exec it in interval.

with execi it works but i thought it should work directly with the hddtemp variable.

Edit /etc/conf.d/hddtemp as needed.

rc-update add hddtemp default
/etc/init.d/hddtemp start

will start the hddtemp daemon if you have not already done so.

In your .conkyrc use ${hddtemp /dev/hda} adjusting the hard drive device to your needs of course.

Hi,
I'm running xgl with beryl and conky keeps flickering though the window I'm working on. It's really quite annoying. Any ideas on how to fix this?

I'm using conky with Openbox, own_window yes and own_window_transparent yes. I set my background with feh --bg-scale as part of my startup scripts. It seems that for some background images, transparency doesn't work properly - it'll be transparent sometimes, and other times will have a solid background colour. What colour that solid is seems to depend on the current openbox theme. There seem to be some circumstances that cause it to stop being transparent briefly - for example any time I close Firefox (which I usually run maximised) it's solid but then goes transparent on the next update - but I haven't figured out what those are yet.

One example of a background image that causes this to happen is my current one, as seen in this screenshot - image is here for reference.

Any ideas?

Is there a way to make conky draws to the root once only and keep its drawing after conky ended?

It appears to me that I have to make conky running to keep conky's text on screen. If conky isn't running and I move a window over those text, those text would disappear.

Also, I have noticed that if I run

conky -i 2 -u 100000

and then move a window, conky will end immediately.

OK - It took me a while to isolate this problem to Conky.

A while ago, I noticed that Conky kept reporting CPU usage to be 10% or above - even when I wasn't running anything. I ran top/htop and it seemed that X would use a lot of resources suddenly every few cycles, and then go back to the normal low usage (overall CPU usage would go from about 1% to 30+% - with the average after a bunch of cycles being about 10% - which Conky reports).

Edit: I just realized X usage goes up whenever Conky refreshes itself - I have this set to the (default?) of 5 seconds.

If Conky isn't running, things aren't sluggish, and top/htop report all to be well.

Now I haven't updated conky or .conkyrc in a long while. So I think some package I updated is causing this. List of packages I've updated:
