How you got beryl + ati radeon r300 to work - report thread

This forum covers all Gentoo-related software not officially supported by Gentoo. Ebuilds/software posted here might harm the health and stability of your system(s), and are not supported by Gentoo developers. Bugs/errors caused by ebuilds from overlays.gentoo.org are covered by this forum, too.

How you got beryl + ati radeon r300 to work - report thread

  • Quote

Post by Phlogiston » Sun Jan 21, 2007 12:12 pm

Due to fact that this thread about the radeon opensource driver is quite complex and mixes with problems getting beryl to work, I think we need this report thread: People running beryl with the r300 driver and latest xorg/mesa packages, please tell us how you got it to work.

*This means attach at least the following config files: (You can use http://rafb.net/paste/ )
-xorg.conf
-xorg.log
*Tell us the exact versions (probably the date of merge too, in case of svn) of packages you are using and from which overlay. Don't forget to post the USE Flags too.
*Any magical tweaks or hacks you did

There are many people (like me 8O ) that just can't get it to work properly, so thanks a lot for your participation here.
I will try to list important bugs or any other special news in this first posting.

Let the cube rotate 8)

Set up Xorg, ATI, Beryl
 http://www.swisstech.net/xorg-ati-3d-beryl/

I moved it out of the forum because editing in a fullscreen editor is way better than a tiny textarea in the browser.

All feedback is appreciated, just put it in this discussion!!

Everything is from portage tree except for x11-drm, libdrm, xf86-video-ati (http://sturmartillerie.org/portage/mesa-cvs/) and beryl related ebuilds (xeffects overlay)

Code: Select all

* x11-drivers/xf86-video-ati-9999::mesa-cvs [R] -debug dri -patch <x11-base/xorg-server-1.1.1-r4::installed>
My r300 card is radeon 9500. No magical hacks ;). It just works everytime I merge it. Issues: it is waaaay too cpu dependant, no pixel shader support in drivers results in non-working water plugin (possibly more in the future as beryl will gain proper pixel shader support for plugins), not stable (X always freezes when I try to close OpenOffice, when running beryl).

primozic's overlay (mesa, mesa-progs, libdrm, x11-drm, xf86-video-ati, xorg-server) + xeffects (beryl) - and beryl working here well good, and uses CPU not that much, and ca. 60MB of ram :)

See what happens with beryl when your CPU is at 100%. That's what I mean by CPU dependency. But this is driver's fault I guess, not beryl's.

Could you please provide your configs and logs as I suggested. I'm quite interested and furthermore you don't help anybody with such a post you just make some ppl (like me :D ) a bit jealous.

Thanks a lot!

Kinda strange... window decorations are missing, not sure why - no success getting them back. Everything else's fine...

Firefox really is a problem. According to the troubleshooting section in the xeffects wiki (http://wiki.gentoo-xeffects.org/Beryl#E ... ecorations) one should NOT export XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS=1 in /etc/env.d/99xlib (or whatever file you used for that).

But I guess now that this setting is missing, firefox crashes sometimes. Is there any way to set that property not globally but for firefox only to see if that has an effect?

Does anyone else have (no) problems with firefox? What are your use flags and versions for firefox?

Hello , I've some troubles since few days , and i don't know if it's mesa-cvs or beryl-svn fault.

When i try to use Render Type (in beryl-manger) Automatic or tfp, i've got some errors and transparency and water don't work, and i've some black borders around the windows and the white cube problem after a moment

Hi everybody to this new thread. I think it was a perfect idea. ;)

Many people wants to get beryl+r300+mergedfb dualhead working with virtual sizes greater than 2048x****, specially those with a laptop.
R300 and higher chips are supposed to support textures of 2560 pixels.
I asked at DRI mailing list and found the way to show GL_MAX_TEXTURE_SIZE with a value of 4096. This is done by changing the MAX_TEXTURE_LEVELS define of src/mesa/main/config.h file to 13, in my case, before compiling mesa.
Now I get textures up to 2560 but a "white cube" (only white background). Windows are all showed right.
Changing other values in the same file, as MAX_TEXTURE_RECT_SIZE to 4096, not solved this. Get a deformed background. :?
I've read about a "white cube" patch before, but don't know where it is and wish to try.
Could someone post it here, or, perhaps a solution to this issue ?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks, but I think this won't solve my problem: Beryl, direct rendering and all is working "fine". I just have random loock ups, which is quite annoying.

I filed a bug here: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=9446

Any help greatly appreciated.

Ok , new Xorg-server and it's ok.

Install
xorg.conf
Xorg.log
emerge --info
glxinfo
beryl

The only 'tricks' i made are:

Code: Select all

rm /etc/env.d/09ati
after ati-drivers unmerge

Code: Select all

ln -s /usr/lib/dri/r300_dri.so /usr/lib/xorg/modules/dri/r300_dri.so
to have direct rendering yes with glxinfo

now tfp is ok and on automatically in new beryl-svn

One more thing, in xorg-server-1.2.99.999 there's a litlle bug with patches. You need to change location for exa and beryl patches or it will crash (if you use them ofkoz).

Heh, when I'm compiling something - beryl is unusable :|
Seems like it's drivers fault - because on friend's i945 it works even if CPU is 100% loaded.
So - we have to wait :(

I didn't need any overlays...it just works on my ~amd64 system with X850Pro card despite these messages when I execute beryl-manager:

XGL Absent, checking for NVIDIA
Nvidia Absent, checking for texture_from_pixmap

I don't use it much since I'm not that interested in eye candy, but it is pretty. One thing that would irritate me though if I used it all the time is it decreases my virtual desktops from nine to four.
Time is what keeps everything from happening all at once.

Thats great work. But wouldn't it be better to put it in the wiki? Just my thought.

yeah, vidcap doesn't compile here, I'll try it again tonight.

I moved it out of the forum because editing in a fullscreen editor is way better than a tiny textarea in the browser.

For the record, both damageproto-1.1.0 and libXdamage-1.1 should be masked when using xorg-server-1.2.0. When using xorg-server-1.2.99.999, damageproto-1.1.0 is required to build, and libXdamage-1.1 should be used.

I filed a bug regarding this, but judging from comment #3, I'm not sure if anything will be done about it.

just switching from -* to ** won't do what I want. ~* will give some build but with both, -* and **, emerge tells me the -9999 package is masked by missing keyword. overlay is up to date. what am I missing here???
