Trouble Installing

  • Quote

Post by scottrick49 » Sun Jan 14, 2007 1:02 am

I am having trouble installing. The problem occurs using the command line installe as well as the gtk+ installer.

It says:
"There was an Exception received during the install that is outside of the normal install errors. This is a bad thing. The error was:[Errno 5] Input/output error"

I think the error is occuring when installation gets to the 'portage' section or something like that.

Try to keep in mind that while I have used Linux a little in the past, I am a newer user. If anybody could help it would be much appreciated.

Hi There

You say that you get the same error when doing the install from the command line. Does it actually happen when you are running the `tar` command to unzip the portage tree? What is actually being executed at the time of the error.

If I look at the installer.log.failed file, right after the error message "[errno 5] input/output error" it gives a traceback (most recent call last). the last error in the log is:

GLIException: PartitionsMountedError :FATAL: partition: Cannot partition /dev/hda due to filesystems being mounted.

Currently my system has windows XP installed on the primary partition. I have created a 1gb linux swap partition and also an ex3 partition for this installation to go. It sounds like it maybe trying to install to the incorrect location, but I don't know for sure.

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/h ... xml?full=1

Can you tell me which step it fails at?

Just thought I would mention that the automated installer (both the GUI and command line versions) is quite experimental, and you would probably get better results installing Gentoo the traditional way (like m_spidey suggested).

If I try to examine my hard disk with: fdisk /dev/hda it tells me that it is unable to open /dev/hda.

/dev/hda1 = my windows NT partition
/dev/hda5 = linux-swap partition
/dev/hda6 = ext3 linux partition

with: fdisk /dev/hdc it will successfully open up a disk, but I am assuming it is a ram drive of sorts, since I am running off the live cd, and there is only 703 MB of space available on it. (my computer has 1gb ram so it would be possible)

How do you know those are you partitions for /dev/hda when fdisk can't open it?

I can see them in the installer. Also, one time I was able to su root (for some reason there is a password now and it doesn't work). When I was root, fdisk succeeded on /dev/hda.

I would recommend using the traditional install method instead of the GUI or command line, that way we could step you through any questions you have.
