network not responding randomly [solved]

  • Quote

Post by kg4ysy » Thu Jan 11, 2007 6:24 pm

I have a server running that for some reason doesn't respond most of the time. It will randomly just not respond. I constantly have an nfs share mounted from it and it times out all the time. If I have an ssh session open, it will time out also. When the machine stops responding, it isn't just a particular service, but the whole machine on the network. It is almost like the network disappears. No apache, no ssh, no nfs, no nothing. The only I have seen to solve this is to just sit around and wait for it, or to get on the server at the terminal and ssh into the computer I'm trying to access it from. This seems to open the connection. I've been looking at the dmesg and /var/log/messages on both machines to find nothing about this. There are 14 errors on the receiving end on the server according to ifconfig, but other than that I don't know what the problem is. When the connection is active it works just fine. I really could use some help.

I turned off nfs and it seemed to work. I don't get what the problem is, but I don't need nfs that much since I don't really like it.

I got the same problem. How do I check/disable power saving? I'm running only the command prompt, no xserver.

Found out that it was a problem with the network on campus. They have it switched all the way into the wall so that only 1 IP address can be active at a time on one plug. I was using a switch so only one computer was using the connection at a time in a sense. I bought a really nice router for 15 bucks from newegg.
