hey.... i emerged proftpd and changed my hostname. now gnome wont start anymore. i looked in my xinitrc and it looked fine. i then tried starting x as root. that works... so.... man........ i dunno what happened... but gnome doesnt work for the normal user anymore oh.. i also installed a kde app... i dunno if that would mess it up.

Turns out, changing my hostname messed up my nvidia-settings. when x tried to change my nvidia driver settings, it failed.. and didnt do the next line in my xinitrc. which started gnome. so..... hostname changes are very bad for both nvidia-settings and mythtv mysql databases.

Does it work if you change the hostname back?

Is /etc/hosts stale?

I'm pretty sure its a problem with my PATH. cause i can do a startx /usr/X11R6/bin/gnome-session and it works... but then mythtv cant see the backend. so.

Well, /usr/X11R6 should link to /usr. /usr/bin should be in your PATH.

Code: Select all

echo $PATH
will show your current PATH

Do you go to X from a console session? I set XSESSION when I want a specific WM/DE. The installed sessions are located at /etc/X11/Sessions. Here is an example from my computer

Code: Select all

 $ ls /etc/X11/Sessions/
Gnome Xfce-4 Xsession fluxbox kde-3.5
If you are using bash

Code: Select all

export XSESSION="Gnome"; startx
will start X with the Gnome DE.

hey. i did both of the things you said.

Code: Select all

 xavier@mythbox ~ $ echo $PATH
/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/opt/bin:/usr/i686-pc-linux-gnu/gcc-bin/4.1.1:/usr/i686-pc-linux-gnu/gcc-bin/4.1.1:/usr/kde/3.5/bin:/usr/qt/3/bin:/usr/games/bin
theres my path. i also did your export xsession gnome thing. and x still didnt start gnome.
