audacious 1.2.2: how to play mp3 files ? [solved]

  • Quote

Post by GungHo » Fri Jan 05, 2007 9:15 pm

Hi,

maybe the question sounds silly, but I'm not able to play .mp3 files with audacious 1.2.2, also not .ogg files.

I'm looking for a replacement of xmms, which had done a good job for some time on my box. But anyway. Audacious was recommended, so I thought I would give it a chance. Emerging is no problem, but I'm only able to play Audio-CD's, but no .mp3 or .ogg files, which is what I like to do.

Are there any USE flags, which must be set to get it up and running ?

Where is the MPEG Layer 1/2/3 player plugin, which is described in the README file of audacious ?

Please give me some tips, what I can do.

Thanks in advance

You have to emerge audacious-plugins with USE="mp3 vorbis"

Hi

Code: Select all

equery uses =audacious-plugins-1.2.2-r1
is a command you can issue

You can set USE flags in /etc/make.conf, or when emerging a packaage. Have a look into the docs at http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/h ... t=2&chap=1

sudo: equery: command not found.

i changed my make.conf file with the use flags:

Code: Select all

USE="alsa mp3 ........."
but i'd rather change the configuration to be program specific. as in, i want to edit the AUDACIOUS configuration to run mp3's and use alsa. i honestly have no idea what i'm doing. can you explain please...?

for equery:

Code: Select all

emerge gentoolkit
and for audacious and alsa,mp3 etc... welcome on gentoo, where you decide at compile time what features an app will get. If you want to set mp3 and alsa flag only for audacious, then

Code: Select all

echo "media-plugins/audacious-plugins mp3 alsa" >> /etc/portage/package.use
EDIT: s/media-sound/media-plugins/ ..sorry!

Uhm, just start audacious, load your mp3s, and enjoy music ;)

And sorry, it's media-plugins/audacious-plugins instead of media-sound in the echo command in my last post.

Ah and of course you have to recompile audacious-plugins after you changed the useflags..

Code: Select all

emerge -av1 audacious-plugins
THEN start, load and enjoy :P

YYYYYEAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH. it works!!!! thanks so much man! you're awesome! i'm jammin hardcore!!! this is sweet!

i've got a question... how come almost every time i emerge something, at the end it gives me this message...

Code: Select all

* GNU info directory index is up-to-date.
* IMPORTANT: 1 config files in /etc need updating.
* Type emerge --help config to learn how to update config files.
then i type

Code: Select all

$ etc-update
the file that needs updating is

Code: Select all

etc/conf.d/hdparm (1)
what is that file? and what do i do when it prompts me to update it? and how to i make sure it will automatically update? why do i have to keep updating it all the time?

now how do i install flashplayer for firefox. and how do i get alsa to work with flashplayer....?

Nice it works now ;)

But for the flash thing, open a new thread. Too much OT in this one! (hint: emerge netscape-flash)
And for hdparm question the same please.

Hi incoming,

a small hint: there is quite a lot of noteworthy knowledge in http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/index.xml, especially Gentoo System Documentation (there are 6 chapters regarding portag, USE flags, Gentoolkit, .., which will cover all of your questions in this thread), then in System Administration and the FAQ. Really good stuff you should have a look into

enjoy

Just a rant: Basic mime type files should be enabled by default but then again I guess keeping minimal use flags is the core principles of Gentoo.

The defaults are that way on desktop profiles. If you find they aren't, please file a bug and we can discuss.
