The reduculous state of bluetooth in gnome.

I have been trying to get an internet connection through my phone with bluetooth working in gentoo for a couple of months now with no success. There seem to be NO bluetooth tools in gnome at all either.

Then, last night a friend of mine was trying to do the same thing on his default kubuntu installation and Had me help him. Plugged in a usb dongle and a message popped up in kde notifying of a bluetooth device. I edited the bluetooth config files and set up rfcomm0 for my phone. I attempled to pair my phone with his computer and a window popped up in kde asking for a pin, perfect. Then I set up kppp to dial out on rfcomm0. I had this connection working from scratch in about 15 minutes.

Now why is it so hard to get it working in gentoo/gnome? This is really frustrating!

This is what I get with the commands in gentoo:

Code: Select all

Looks good right? Well it's not.

I restarted the bluetooth service to make sure that the rfcomm device was linked and then tried to use Gnome ppp to dial out. When I do that I get a message saying "Can not open modem" and a log:

Code: Select all

--> Ignoring malformed input line: ";Do NOT edit this file by hand!"
--> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.56
--> Cannot open /dev/rfcomm0: Device or resource busy
--> Cannot open /dev/rfcomm0: Device or resource busy
--> Cannot open /dev/rfcomm0: Device or resource busy
Any ideas? It would be nice if there were some bluetooth tools for gnome but it seems that the gap between gnome and kde keeps getting bigger and bigger every day with kde winning.

gnome-bluetooth is a joke. It gives you a little tray icon to receive Bluetooth files and that's it. No configuration options, no other abilities, that's it.

Code: Select all

white-rabbit xamindar # emerge -av gnome-bluetooth

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild R ] net-wireless/gnome-bluetooth-0.8.0 USE="-debug" 0 kB

Total: 1 package (1 reinstall), Size of downloads: 0 kB

Would you like to merge these packages? [Yes/No] n

Quitting.
I have had that installed for a while now and on the most rescent version I get NOTHING. No config program, no icon in the tray. Pathetic.

Thanks for the tip though :D

The program appears under "System Tools" in the Gnome menu, you run that and that gives you the little icon.

That's what you get for using GNOME. They don't believe in options or features.

It's 'Ease of use' :)

Yeah too bad to. Gnome seems to be going backward in time with each new release. I still support it and hope they correct their ways only because I like to be able to put my menu bar where I want and I like the way gtk apps look.

"Ease of use" is a very clever way of saying "we are too lazy to provide usefull features". Many programs make a very good way of making it user friendly by providing experience settings. (xine, azureus)

You know, I might just switch over to kde soon.
