Why I'm sticking with gentoo

Gentoo has it's flaws, but I'm running gentoo on my computer for the time being. For those of you who want to leave, you know where the door is, and it's kept unlocked. I mean serious, how totally awesome is to be able run an unstable version of the gimp without upgrading everything from gtk+ to glibc to an unstable version. Gentoo also has a comprehensive repository of ebuilds including commercial software. I feel like keeping my boots planted right where they are.

+++!
I love gentoo, but I am certainly no guru, despite what it says above.

I couldn't agree more.

I demand the right to be able to completely stuff my machine up. I don't blame anyone else, I know that I've done. And, in the 2 years I have been running gentoo I have never had to reinstall from scratch. I have always managed to recover my system by undoing changes.

I admit that running a gentoo system requires slightly ( :) ) more time that other distros for admin and updates but it's all a trade-off for the flexibility.

Wow, a post where someone is saying why they LIKE gentoo? Is the moon in some funny alignment today?

I agree, and I'm with it till the end!

You'll take me from Gentoo when you pry it from my cold dead hands. :lol:

Yesterday I was showing someone PCLinuxOS, and it worked perfectly. But, for some reason, it didn't go on the internet... It worked perfectly from the CD, but the install was borked. And I couldn't do anything about it. I tried modprobing stuff, checking configs but because everything was tied into a GUI, it made things far harder than they should've been.

Gah. I'm installing Gentoo on their computer. They might not know how to admin it, but with your help and the fact that I'll be the one admining it and no them, I think it'll work out.

Plus, they want Beryl and PCLinuxOS doesn't have that as far as I know. Not knocking it or anything, it's still an awesome LiveCD and a blazingly fast distro, but I have become far too accustomed with a command line to just give it up like that. Plus... TOTAL CONTROL over my system is awesome.
I'm too lazy to keep this stupid signature up to date, so here's something more interesting:
My friend Hetdegon can draw if you ask me.
Now using PClinuxOS on my laptop and Gentoo on my desktop and new laptop.

That's the kicker isn't it? Once you have control, it's soooooo hard to relinquish it!

I've dabbled with binary distros, but it's almost like using Gentoo handicaps you when using those sorts of distros...not that it's a bad thing :wink:

Go through this door would be for me go back to where I was 1 year and a half before. No way !!! I'm sticking with gentoo. Besides, my computers woudn't forgive me that. (One of them had the cd-rom drive broken during a windows install a long time ago. :lol: )
