resolve.conf likes to run away?

Post by BioSLuDge » Wed Dec 13, 2006 4:32 pm

For whatever weird reason, my resolve.conf loses all of the nameservers in int once I reboot? Its as if someone went into the file and just removed the line that points to my dns server. All I have to do is read the nameserver to the resolve.conf and everything works fine. I do have a dhcp server setup but the box is set to a static ip (is not set to pull from dhcp), besides the dhcp server points to the dhcp server. I'm also having some problems with game servers being seen automatically running on this server (it does work to manually add it). Another of my game servers is also really slow to connect so I'm wondering if something is messed up with some of my networking installation stuff. However, I do run a samba server and a few other file sharing system that work fine (on the same box).

If you can help me on any part of this it would be great.
Thanks for your time

Right off the bat, it sounds like this system was once configured to use DHCP. With the system up, bring down the network by using the /etc/init.d/net.ethN down, where N is the ethernet device number. Once it is down, check your resolv.conf, it will probably be in the bad state. Check in etc to see if you have a resolv.conf.sav or resolv.conf.sv. Please remove these files, and correct your resolv.conf. Once that is complete restart the network and check resolv.conf again. If it is still broke, check your /etc/conf.d/net and check to see if you are declaring any DNS information in there.

... just not setup correctly.

Normally the DHCP server will give out the correct DNS info to any client requesting an IP address. This is what goes into your /etc/resolv.conf so that you don't need to set it up manually.
