Interestingly, today was the first time I ever heard of AllOfMP3.com, and it was because of this story about Russia agreeing to shut them down:

Yeah...they've been agreeing to that for ever now. However, Russia is not the country it once was. It's governed by the rule of law now, and allofmp3.com insist what they do is legal in Russia. So, at the very least, it would seem a change in the law in Russia would be required. I can't see that happening overnight.

Well they are. Sure Putin has his henchmen sorting out his political enemies, but for stuff like this they will have to go to court and argue the case just like they would in the UK.

I use emusic. They've got some good indie stuff on there.

Also, altavista's MP3 search does wonders.

iTunes isn't the only legal place to get MP3s off of the internet. And I would never buy anything from them. Ever. First of all, I don't have an iPod. Second of all, DRM and Linux don't get along very well. So I say screw iTunes.

In fact, wasn't the whole point of this thread to find places with non-DRM'd legal MP3 downloads?

Welcome to the friendly world of free music of netlabels. Some bigger ones to start with:

I'm linking mostly electronic ones, 'cause they rule the scene with masses:
http://www.thinner.cc/
http://www.miasmah.com/
http://www.kahvi.org/
http://sutemos.net/
http://www.ideology.de/index2.php

There are some ambient releases that I really like. If you like calm stuff, check them out:
Various Artists "Lighted Apartment Compilation" mia050,
Protogroup "Love Gives Strength To My Soul" apl037, Philipp Weigl "Monsters" thn090. And one minimal release from Sweden's electronic-brain Anders Ilar "Dfrntly" lim02, that my friend suggested, but I haven't went through yet.

And every netlabel has links, links and lots of links. Be careful not to drown...

PS! There is Netlabel Catalogue that categorizes them...

As thread starter didn't specify which kind of music he and his girlfriend like, I couldn't assume anything. Maybe they like alternative electronic music, maybe not.

But why one has to listen music that billion other people listen daily? Of course Madonna or Red Hot Chili Peppers don't release their stuff under independent near-zero profit netlabels, they are too bound with their Warners and Sonys already. But do you know Monolake, ISAN, Anders Ilar, Marsen Jules -- they are very bright artists in electronic music scene worldwide. They all have released a track or even release under some netlabel. There are artists who are picked up from netlabels and continued under "real" recordlabels such as Warp(!). But this doesn't matter if someone is famous or not. What matters is the music.

EDIT: Sadly I can't link to Thinner release 066, which is Vladislav Delay's "Demo(n) Cuts", and this man is one of the best dub/ambient-dub producers right? Thinner has removed much of its releases. I really don't know why, but I hope they'll be online some time again.
