Final Fantasy XI

Hi

I've been a huge fan of the FinalFantasy game series, ever since I tried FF3 on my old games console. So I was wondering if anyone knew if the transgaming people were having any plans to support this game? I have a feeling this game will be huge...

I finally got my gentoo box up and running and am so happy! I want to totally trash my windows partition but my poor poor FFXI game is still sitting there. Besides regular issues of trying figure out how to get my printer working and why my mouse wheel doesn't scroll, my only concern is getting my FFXI running. And sadly because of an extremely bad call of portags on my behalf, I get to run the installation all over again.

So my main question is: What setup as far of software you found works best? I'm running on a 2.6.11 kernel, KDE (going retry with gnome because it just sounds cooler), and nvidia GeForce video cards.

Sadly I realize that my FFXI isnt going to run any better or faster on a linux box. But if it means telling M$ to go to h*ll, so be it!

Long live Choice!

once i get gentoo up and running how i want it, to have FFXI running would get rid of my need for win XP totaly (which would be great)

just wondering if there hav been any advances in getting FF up and running?

I'd love for FFVII to run with either cedega or wine but thanks to some sound aspects of the game, it isn't very... well... possible using either program.

You're better off with the Playstation version, the PC one has awful music.

After reading these posts I decided to give the game another go in linux. The problem I was referring to is that the game cannot find any midi devices and will therefore refuse to start (or even to run the configuration tool) I did a google search for midi and wine and found some mentions of a program 'timidity'. I emerged it and two patches some people made for it. Unfortunately, I have to have the kde soundsystem enabled to run it (I've had serious problems with it and arts in the past, but I'm willing to give it another go, especially if I can find some use out of it) I'll post again if I get any luck with anything, although it may be a while, depending on how many things need to be re-emerged for arts to be setup again.

Ffxi

Post by tpf80 » Sat Oct 28, 2006 8:54 pm

I have a similar issue with FFXI - in that if i could get it to work on linux, then I would uninstall windows altogether. I already have used linux for about 3 years as my main OS for work and everything else but FFXI >.<. Because I saw that there was not much headway in making FFXI work in linux, I decided a conservative way to move my desktop to linux was in order. I knew testing anything in VMware would be impossible since it has little to no 3D support, and I wanted to test it on my real hardware. I had a 230 gig USB hard drive laying around, so I just installed Gentoo on it. ALthough the drive performance is a little slow, at least gentoo runs fully on my real hardware and now I can test FFXI on it. If successful, I can blast the windows and image my USB drive to the internal and be free from M$ once and for all. If not, all i have to do in order to play FFXI is simply turn off the computer, unplug the usb drive, and boot up. Viola! im in windows =(.

So far...

So far no luck making it work in wine, but now I am trying a different approach that may get results:

I am in stalling FFXI in vmware and then I will attempt to use 3d_analyze from 3dfxzone.it

what this tool supposedly does is emulate the features that your video card is missing via your CPU (notibly T&L), thus any features that I can't get working natively in VMWare, I should be able to emulate and get the game working pretty well as long as I have a good processor. (Will an AMD 64 4000+ be enough?). Of course ffxi has a million updates to do so I will post the results once I finish.

I got ffxi installed in vmware, and I enabled 3d acceleration. I can tell the difference between when it is accelerated or not because when it is not accelerated the playonline viewer looks really pixelated. I can pretty much do anything in the viewer, and the utility that checks your specs tells me that ffxi should work fine in the vm, but when I start the game I get a blank screen and vmware crashes. Grr...

Why doesn't FF XI work in wine? Can't you post error messages?

I also have FFXI (on my Windows part, I dual boot for FFXI and Thief: Deadly Shadows). I'd love for it to work on Windows, but even with Cedega, I hear it's so poor it's worth a 10 or 20 gigabyte Windows partition, despite capitalist implications of such a partition even being imagined to be on your computer. We'll see how it goes though. No sense in asking Squeenix to pleeeaaase make a Linux port though. Bloody moneysuckers they are!

ps. I'm on the Leviathan server.

Update!

I finally got ffxi to work in vmware, and I can actually log into the game. Heres what I did:

Currently I am using vmware workstation 5.5.3 in Gentoo linux using AMD64 arch.

I created a windowsXP pro virtual machine set to break up into 2 gig file sizes (this is important as for some reason the AOSS wrapper will not work if you have the disk as a single large file.), and in the machine I edited the .vmx file to have the following lines at the bottom:

Code: Select all

mks.enable3d = "TRUE"
svga.vramsize = "134217728"
vmouse.present = "FALSE"

I also changed the sound.filename to this:

Code: Select all

sound.fileName = "/dev/dsp"
To launch VMware, i typed "aoss vmware" on the command line, and vmware popped up. I could then run my virtual machine and install ffxi.

Now before running ffxi I had to install one last piece of software to make sure that t&l would work in the virtual machine. 3d analyze. http://www.3dfxzone.it/dir/tools/3d%5Fanalyze/archive/.

Do not use the latest edition as it will not work with ffxi. I tried them all, and 2.26 was the latest version that works.

To launch ffxi do the following:
1) open 3d analyze, and check off "emulate HW Tnl Caps".
2) next to the item marked "1 EXE" select the location of your pol.exe file
3) next to the item makrked "2 DLL path" select the location of your ffximain.dll file
4) hit the "run" button, and you can now log into ffxi in vmware.

It has worked well for me, although certain NPC's are missing body parts. I am wondering if this can be fixed with settings in 3d analyze or if its a shortfall of the VMware graphics driver.

Check out the q-gears project:

http://q-gears.sourceforge.net/

It is far from finished, but once it is done you will be able to play FF7 natively on Linux (and Windows, Mac OS X, etc..) using either the PC game's data or the Playstation version of the game's data.
