maybe try the open source drivers, which graphic card from ati, model, name

post /etc/X11/xorg.conf

you need to emerge -uavDN xorg-x11 and see if it pulls anything in.
I'm too lazy to keep this stupid signature up to date, so here's something more interesting:
My friend Hetdegon can draw if you ask me.
Now using PClinuxOS on my laptop and Gentoo on my desktop and new laptop.

I'm experiencing this same error. I'm guessing that it doesn't liek the fglrx_drv.so module or something. Were you ever able to solve this?

I decided to try this again, nearly a year later and the ati-drivers still bomb Xorg -configure. Same basic traceback as earlier. I figured I'd just mention it...

The best solution I have came up with is the emerge -C ati-drivers and run Xorg -configure. After this you can emerge ati-drivers and then manually edit your xorg.conf to use the new driver.
