Everything broked?

This is a strange problem that cropped up a few days ago. I noticed much of X was missing. Where it went, I have no idea. I reemerged X, and it all worked.

Now, this morning, I tried starting X, and it gave me a bunch of errors, both X and Fluxbox related. So, I decided to reemerge X and fluxbox while I'm in school.

I planned on reinstalling Gentoo next week, because I need to clean my old XP partition out, and move everything around, and then attempt a dual boot.

Is this strange activity a sign that someone has cracked my computer? I don't see how this could be possible, as it's behind a hardware firewall. Also the fact that there's a bunch of windows machines on my LAN (family computers) which are a lot easier to crack, no...?

Oh well, I'd at least like to know why this strange behavior is happening, and then if there is a solution, that'd be even better (but not 100% needed, as I'm reinstalling next week).

when was the last time you fsck'd your drives? From your description i first suspect a hardware problem or possibly a wayward script in cron. I'd back-up all essential data before a reboot though.

Also what are your disc/partitions formated as? ext2, ext3, xfs, ?? And which kernel are you using?

I had this problem yesterday - came home and found that X has decided that it wanted to behave really strangely.

Did an

Code: Select all

emerge -p xfree
and found that it believed that I had xfree 3.4, instead of 4.3! Sure enough, looking into /usr/X11R6/lib I found that I was missing heaps of libraries...

Remerging xfree fixed it... but it's still got me scared :D
