X -configure problem

  • Quote

Post by fly away » Sun Nov 05, 2006 2:33 am

Hi all.
I've installed ati drivers, xorg etc. I can run Xserver now either by typing X or startx. But if I try X -configure, it fails to start and says it can't find ati_misc.so
Is this a big problem? My initial goal is to install kde and since I can run Xserver now, I am not sure if it will be ok after I install kde. Any ideas?
Thanks.

I've read all the docs and faqs before installing. And I am not in "desktop environments" as I haven't intalled kde yet:) My question is essentially about X and ati drivers.

You'd be surprized, but I don't :) I tried to use it to configure X, it didn't work, I used xorgconfig instead + a couple of manual additions and I can startx now. I was just curious if there is (or there will be) a problem because one of the recommended ways of configuration failed.

First question I have is if you can start X why do you need to run X -configure? All that X -configure or xorgcfg or xorgconf or aticonfig or nvidia-xconfig do is edit your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file to that X will run. In fact, if you know what settings you should have you don't need to run them at all.

In any case, in order to know why it's failing we'd need you to post the part of the log (/var/log/Xorg.0.log) where it fails and whether you're using ati-drivers, fglrx, vesa or something else.

Also, what graphics card are you using?

I am using Sapphire ATI Radeon X1800GTO. gentoo x86_64
The error message:
(EE) Failed to load /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/drivers/atimisc_drv.so
(II) UnloadModule: "atimisc"
(EE) Failed to load module "atimisc" (loader failed, 7)
....

I installed ati-drivers. Basically I just followed http://odin.prohosting.com/wedge01/gent ... #3_howinst
step by step.
