and create a stage4
... I forgot: for this you need an external harddrive / an usbstick with big capacity / another internal harddrive
Thx for your help

VFS: Mounted root (reiser4 filesystem) readonly.
Freing unused kernel memory: 172k freed
reiser4 panicked cowardly: reiser4[hotplug(296)]: readpage_tail (fs/reiser4/plugin/item/tail.c:426)[umka-2517]:

this seems to be an I/O-error related or caused by hotplug

1) boot into liveCD and fsck.reiser4 your partition

2) what mount-options do you have for reiser4 ?

for me it's noatime, nodiratime

Code: Select all

/dev/sda5               /               reiser4         noatime,nodiratime              0 1
(change that from chroot via liveCD)

3) are you using ~x86 or x86 ?

Hi,

Ok i'll give it a try :D
Thx

Anyway i really lost as well with the ide configuration in the bios (Asus P5W DH deluxe)
I mean if i change the ide configuration some times the kernel is booting (and i got the error) and sometimes i've got something like "VFS: can't mount "sda3" - unknow block" or something like that :?
And then some times my sda change to hdc :roll:
To clarify :

- 2 two sata hard drives plug into the Ez-backup ports
- One ide/ata dvd recoder plug into the "normal" ide ports (mean intel ICH7 chipset)

Can you give me please your configuration ? (and as well your ide configuration in the bios)

See you :wink:

EDIT : I'm on ~x86 and i follow the conrad guide (but i didn't install the no-sources kernel) :
glibc2.5r3
gcc-4.1.1

that's exactly the same hardware-configuration like mine :wink:
(in addition I also have 2 more IDE-harddrives connected to the JMicron)
Can you give me please your configuration ?
sure, it however is based on 2.6.19-rc4-mm1
I'll create one for more "sane" kernels later:
config for 2.6.19-rc4-mm1 (x86)
(and as well your ide configuration in the bios)
I'll give you this later, since I need the computer right now (working with it)

Hi,

Thx for your time :D
Look like I enable the ide support and I don't need it (that why maybe i got the kernel panic)
I'll see it's compiling :wink:

EDIT :

Ok i downgrade the hotplug version but i still get this kernel-panic :s
Also I've got the same, like you, boot options in my fstab

Should I need to unable RAID support in the kernel (even i pass by an hardware raid) ??

Should I need to unable RAID support in the kernel (even i pass by an hardware raid) ??
yes, you could try that, that hardware-raid shouldn't need any additional raid-driver

well, so you're using the conrad guide

it's a little bit ... advanced for the beginning ... :roll:
CFLAGS="-Os -march=${YOURARCH} -msse3 -frename-registers -fweb -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer -funit-at-a-time -freorder-blocks -fno-ident -freorder-blocks-and-partition -fgcse-sm -fgcse-las -fgcse-after-reload -fmerge-all-constants -combine"
CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS} -fvisibility-inlines-hidden"
I suspect your problems are related to some CFLAGS not playing well (especially -Os & -msse3 ...) :

1) I would first ask in conrad's installation thread for help since he supports his installation
he'll surely have an solution for you problem ...

2) please change a line in grub to:

Code: Select all

ro root=/dev/sda* "irqpoll" "pci=noacpi" vga=792
sda* is your root partition, leave out "pci=noacpi" if you don't often use usb-harddrives

then it should look somewhat like this (example):

Code: Select all

title 2.6.19-rc4-mm1 (x86)
root (hd0,0)
kernel (hd0,0)/vmlinuz-2.6.19-rc4-mm1 ro root=/dev/sda5 "irqpoll" "pci=noacpi" vga=792
3) deactivate PARALLEL_STARTUP:

Code: Select all

# Set to "yes" if you want the rc system to try and start services
# in parallel for a slight speed improvement. NOTE: When RC_PARALLEL_STARTUP
# is enabled, init script output is replaced with simple "service foo
# starting/stopping" messages so that output is not mixed up.
# You can stop this from happening on the command line by passing --verbose
# to the init script or by setting RC_VERBOSE="yes" below.

RC_PARALLEL_STARTUP="no"
4) if the above don't help could you please change the above quoted CFLAGS to (unless cheater1034 doesn't tell you other way to solve it):

Code: Select all

CFLAGS="-O2 -march=${YOURARCH} -pipe -mfpmath=sse"
CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu"
CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"
and then recompile your system

Code: Select all

emerge -e system

so you won't use all of the architectural benefits of conroe, but I personally would go for -march=nocona
worked here fine, I'm only using pentium-m for backwards compatibility with my laptop ...

Hi,

#2 --> still get the kernel panic

Here is my grub.conf :
root (hd0,1)
kernel (hd0,1)/vmlinuz ro root=/dev/sda3 "irqpoll"
#3 --> This wasn't set to "yes" (RC_PARALLEL_STARTUP="no")

#1 & 4 --> Ok i'll post to conrad topic et then i switch to this topic to his topic

Thx to have already post my problem in the conrad guide topic :)

I See that you have hyperthreading in your kernel compiled. Does it make any sense on a Core 2 Duo?
Thought Alendale and Conroe don´t have hyperthreading implemented :?:

no, not yet / not really :roll:

on the current sold Conroes / Allendales HT is disabled, but I have it enabled, just in case :wink:

It's not going to break your kernel, but it isn't really necessary, either. From the kernel documentation:

Code: Select all

SMT scheduler support improves the CPU scheduler's decision making when dealing with Intel Pentium 4 chips with HyperThreading at a cost of slightly increased overhead in some places. If unsure say N here.

yes there is

since I had to remove some folders from the livecd on its building process the possibility exists that some libraries are missing /
that means some apps may not work which should work

it can also be that some apps are broken due to bugs ... (bugs.gentoo.org)

could you please tell me which application needs this lib?
then I'll have a look at it ...
Well, obviously I think, pppd with ATM support that is ;) You cannot use ATM without pppoatm.so(so every ADSL USB modem is useless fo installation)

Anyways, the kernel even has modules for my Speedtouch USB ADSL modem, but they're pretty useless without pppoatm.so for pppd. If you could add it into the next revision it would be splendid.

Oh, and there's also ppp_generic kernel module missing, but It seems that everything would work ok without it(maybe it's compiled into the kernel itself?).

PS: does anybody here has any expierience with booting with GRUB installed on aPATA drive attached to the JMicron? It gives me an error 21 and dies.

VampyreUK,

First Grub saying Error 15 is just an obtuse way of saying file not found.

Looking at your grub.conf you have (or had)

Code: Select all

kernel /boot/ kernel-genkernel-x86-2.6.17-gentoo-r8 root=/dev/ram0 init=/linuxrc ramdisk=8192 real_root=/dev/hda3 udev
As your root is on a dmraid set,

Code: Select all

real_root=/dev/hda3
is not correct. It will be

Code: Select all

real_root=/dev/mapper/isw_cbhfacbicf_RAID3
/dev/hda3 is the third partition on the master drive on the primary IDE controller. I thing you also meed a dmraid statement to get dmraid started too.

You may find this thread useful too.

In general dmraid should be avoided - you only reason to use it is because you need Windows and Linux to both access the raid set. Its not hardware raid, its software raid, with the software being provided in the BIOS. If you only need Linux to use the raid, kernel raid is a better choice.
Regards,

NeddySeagoon

those that have never had a hard drive fail.

I am having the same problem booting from the PATA controller with Grub and Fedora Core 6. I found a patch more than 8 hd devices (hd8 - hd15) and rebuilt grub, but to no avail.

Will the standard 2.6.18-r2 gentoo kernel work after the install? I only need to boot from the disk to copy files from my existing gentoo install, but this includes a standard kernel compiled on the other system. Or is this some kind of specific patch that is used against 2.6.18?

Ok apparently not, more more searching... Ugh..

I guess I'll need to read a lot more guides..

Hi,

First and foremost, thank you very much KernelOfTruth, for making this great LiveCD.

Your (and all that contributed) work enabled me to boot my new P5B-E based MythTV HTPC. Unfortunately, there's no support for the Gigabit netcard (Attansic L1 http://www.hogchain.net/attansic/attansic.html).

I thought, I could just download the kernel used on the LiveCD (2.6.19-rc5-mm1), patch it with the patch from the URL above and compile the driver as a module, on my other Gentoo box. However, I've been unable to find that particular kernel anywhere.

I fully understand, that you do not want to make a new LiveCD just to add this driver (http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-36 ... ml#3649696), but do you think it's possible to persuade you to either share the kernel sources or perhaps compile the driver module and share it?

If you don't want to or don't have the time, I'll understand.

Once again thank you for your hard work and time spent on this project. :D

@Cthulhu666:

Thanks :D

you just showed me a typo in my site :roll:

so it's release r5 for x86 which you downloaded:

2.6.19-rc5-mm1:
mm-sources are the "experimental" branch administered by Andrew Morton
rc-sources are the testing branch of the kernel administered by Linus Torvalds himself (I guess)

http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/ ... c5.tar.bz2
http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/ ... c5-mm1.bz2

Code: Select all

extract the sources:
tar xjpf linux-2.6.19-rc5.tar.bz2
unzip the patch

Code: Select all

bunzip2 -d 2.6.19-rc5-mm1.bz2
then change directory into it,

Code: Select all

patch -p1 < ../2.6.19-rc5-mm1
I'll have a look to compile a driver for you, if that doesn work (provided the driver compiles for that particular version)

alternatively I'll offer a download with the (complete) kernel-sources with / without that particular driver

Thanks :D

you just showed me a typo in my site :roll:

I'll have a look to compile a driver for you, if that doesn work (provided the driver compiles for that particular version)

alternatively I'll offer a download with the (complete) kernel-sources with / without that particular driver
Hehe, I didn't notice any typos on your site, but I didn't read it that closely either. :wink:

Thanks a bunch for the links. I guess I was looking in the wrong place, I'm just so used to finding almost everything in portage these days :oops:

With these sources, I should be able to compile the driver myself, but in the unlikely event, that I fail, I'll get back to you and tap into your endless resources :P
