Cflag for AMD GEODE NX 1750 cpu

  • Quote

Post by lanlane » Mon Jun 05, 2006 10:13 am

Hello,

I'm just preparing to install Gentoo on a new system. It runs with a AMD GEODE NX 1750 cpu.
Unfortunately the cpu isn't on http://gentoo-wiki.com/Safe_Cflags :cry:
Does anyone know safe Cflags for this cpu?
Thanks a lot!

L.

well, although searching for yourself at AMDs website shouldn't be to hard
(hint: http://www.amd.com/us-en/assets/content ... /32035.pdf)

those should be safe
CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu"
CFLAGS="-march=k8 -O2 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer"
CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"
Nothing is secure / Security is always a trade-off with usability / Do not assume anything / Trust no-one, nothing / Paranoia is your friend / Think for yourself

-march=k8
Why??

The document you linked you says at the bottom of page 30 that k8 "causes it to generate high-performance code for the AMD Athlon 64 and AMD Opteron processors".
So why should you use that on a Geode?
And the document is titled "Compiler Usage Guidelines for 64-Bit Operating Systems on AMD64 Platforms".
The Geode is just 32-Bit.

I also own the model and use -march=athlon because the CPU is based on the athlon:
cat /proc/cpuinfo
processor : 0
vendor_id : AuthenticAMD
cpu family : 6
model : 8
model name : AMD Athlon(tm) Prosowwor
stepping : 1
cpu MHz : 1396.207
cache size : 256 KB
fdiv_bug : no
hlt_bug : no
f00f_bug : no
coma_bug : no
fpu : yes
fpu_exception : yes
cpuid level : 1
wp : yes
flags : fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 sep mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 mmx fxsr sse syscall mp mmxext 3dnowext 3dnow ts fid vid
bogomips : 2796.50
Am I wrong? Please correct me if so.

http://www.amd.com/us-en/ConnectivitySo ... 37,00.html
The NX processor family leverages Mobile AMD Athlon™ processor technology to deliver superior computing power for a variety of thin-client and other applications including point-of-sale terminals, kiosks, high-end printers and home media systems.
In other words: It's a low-power-consumption Athlon.

-march=athlon should work.

I think it's athlon

Per the AMD website:
The AMD Geode NX processor family is ideally suited for applications that require an optimum combination of high-performance and low-power consumption. The NX processors are supported by extensive production infrastructure – built around a proven 7th-generation architecture – and a long-term supply commitment.
Notice the "7th-generation" bit. I believe that means Athlon socket A.

By the way, what do you think about the performance? Were you able to go fanless?
I still keep in one of my drawers the lifeless bodies of 7 Athlons or Durons that met their fate due to overheating (those clips on the socket A fans were HORRIBLE) so I'm a bit reluctant to go fanless myself. But I'm really tempted to buy one of these for my MythTV box.

The geode series are just Athlons, and like the rest of Athlons, they have exactly zero 64 bits capabilities :P So, -k7.

The gentoo wiki sugests this:

Code: Select all

CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu"
CFLAGS="-march=athlon-xp -O2 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer"
CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"
For the Geode NX, you can see it here: http://gentoo-wiki.com/Safe_Cflags#Athl ... _.28AMD.29

HELLO!
It's an Athlon. You better do NOT use -march=athlon-xp I think!

Leaving technical considerations appart, an Athlon-xp is the same than a Classic Athlon, just with SSE support. Wich the Geode NX series fully support. Earlier Geodes does not support it though.

Anyway, if there is any doubt, just look at /proc/cpuinfo, our friend has this info:

Code: Select all

cat /proc/cpuinfo
 processor : 0
 vendor_id : AuthenticAMD
 cpu family : 6
 model : 8
 model name : AMD Athlon(tm) Prosowwor
 stepping : 1
 cpu MHz : 1396.207
 cache size : 256 KB
 fdiv_bug : no
 hlt_bug : no
 f00f_bug : no
 coma_bug : no
 fpu : yes
 fpu_exception : yes
 cpuid level : 1
 wp : yes
 flags : fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 sep mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 mmx fxsr sse syscall mp mmxext 3dnowext 3dnow ts fid vid
 bogomips : 2796.50
You can see that the sse flag is present, so, athlon-xp is fine. Just Athlon would also work. You could say -march=athlon -msse... I would be mostly the same.
