xorg runs low-res on second run (SOLVED)

xorg runs low-res on second run (SOLVED)

hello all,
just recently i've noticed a weird thing with my xorg - once i quit it and run it again (i'm not xdm/gdm user, so just 'startx' from terminal) it runs in lowres mode, 640x480.
i'm using RADEON M6 (7000) on Dell Latitude c610, so there is my tft screen and crt video out. my impression is that xorg either confuses primary and secondary outputs or after failing to initialize CRT (which is not there) drops to "failsafe" 640x480.

I'm using xorg-x11-7.1 and xf86-video-ati-6.6.3,
playing around with driver options in xorg.conf didn't give any results.
cloning mode is not enabled, but even if it would it shouldn't endup like that...

Is any one experiencing anything similar?

hi cgmd,
i've tried downgrading to xf86-video-ati-6.5.8.0 but compile would fail.
can it be that this situation relates anyhow to acpi or udev ?
at least those are two things i've been playing around recently...

I've noticed the following in Xorg.0.log output:

But, the fact that X runs at the correct resolution "some of the time" (after reboot) is, to me, the confusing issue...
What are the things that might change when X opens and closes the first time? :?

so i think it's the driver which misdetects tft as crt and since the syncfreqs are totally out of range puts it into lowest res... eh,
i donno what else to think, the only hope is a fresh ebuild of xf86-video-ati later im afraid.

i guess ACPI warning comes from kernel's Power managment -> ACPI -> Video settings.
There is no ACPI at least on my M6, perhaps neither on your M7, so that might be the reason...

after i downgraded to xorg-server-1.0.2-r7 and xf86-video-ati-6.5.8.0 the problem is gone.

together with that i had to emerge older xf86-input-keyboad and -mouse, and probably re-emerging mesa, opengl-config and xorg-x11 isn\t a bad idea as well

i have ibm t40 and i solve this problem :-) you must more specify LCD type in xorg.conf in radeon card section.. look in man radeon ;-)

Downgrading to xorg-server-1.0.2-r7 and xf86-video-ati-6.5.8.0 solved the problem for me, as well...

I think I found something more interesting while trying to solve the same problem.

Here is a diff of my Xorg.0.log, the first one with the problem and the second one without the problem.
I downgraded xf86-video-ati from 1 version to see if it would solve the problem and it wouldn't. Then, when viewing the log, I saw that the radeon driver had MergeFB automatically enabled even if it wasn't in the config file. It doesn't find any valid mode for the inexistant second screen and falls back to the safe 640x480 for both screen showing the poor resolution on the LCD laptop screen.

I guess that everyone that had this problem was on a laptop?

Setting
Option "MergeFB" "false"
in the video driver section solved the problem here with the latest ATI driver version.
