Gentoo on Core 2 duo

  • Quote

Post by Xyzk » Mon Oct 02, 2006 9:12 pm

I have Core 2 duo E660, and i dont know which install download. I have tried amd64 but at begining i had problems (maybe not connected) with error at booting and selecting root or shell (it speaks to me everything).

Im newb, at gento and its first system on this computer :P I hope you will have any patience for me, and i want to apologize if i made anyone angry. Im just some kind of virgin-queen in opression.

SOLVED
What happens is that no PATA drives are found, including your cd-rom. You can force the system to detect your cd-rom by typing this at the prompt:
gentoo all-generic-ide
Thanks ewerybody :]

The core 2 is a 64-bit CPU, so you can use the AMD64 LiveCD. If you are new to Linux I would recommend the 32-bit version as there are some issues with 64-bit that can be a pain to work around.

What i can see (my problem)

1 error
>>Attempting to mount CD:- /dev/sda8
!! Could not find CD to boot, something else needed
>>Loading keymaps
2error
>> Determining root device...
!! The root block device is unspecified or not deteckted.
Pleasw specify a device to boot, or "shell" for a shell...
Any informations that can help solve the problem?

My guess is that your motherboard is using a JMicron harddisk controller and the kernel version used on the livecd has a bug with this particular controller.

What happens is that no PATA drives are found, including your cd-rom. You can force the system to detect your cd-rom by typing this at the prompt:
gentoo all-generic-ide

This way all PATA drives will be found. There are two problems. If you install on a SATA disk, this disk too will be treated as PATA so you have to pay attention when you edit fstab and grub.conf so that you use /dev/sda instead of /dev/hda. If you install on a PATA disk, you will have to get the -mm sources to find a fix for the JMicron controller, if not, the system won't find your drive and hence you can't boot.

If you're unfamiliar with linux in general and gentoo in particular, maybe you should wait until an "official" kernel support your hardware. It's been a few weeks since I installed using this controller, maybe there are some new modified livecds around that you could use.

I am considering a similar motherboard, have you been successful yet in installing Gentoo.

I have it installed on that motherboard and processor combination, and it runs great.

As long as your running a multi-lib system, there are no problems that i am aware of..
flash works with the firefox-bin, wine works without any problems ( my course uses two applications that are windows only).
