Beryl on nVidia 1.0.9625

It seems as though all topics are on vanilla Compiz, and they don't work for the newly-renamed Beryl, which is what I have. It generally segfaults with nVidia, though it does detect it. Has anyone had any luck with it?

The driver itself is wonderful; I can finally use the Gold cursors.

I had to comment RENDER under the Extentions section else i'd get a segfault as well...

Code: Select all

Section "Extensions"
        Option "Composite" "Enable"
# Option "RENDER" "Enable"
EndSection

Working right out of the box with svn ebuilds from sabanyon overlay ...but it's to unstable imo, so i'm sticking to vanilla compiz :)

Except I'm sticking with (non accelerated) xfwm4 for the most part and turning on beryl once in a while to play with the sweet-ass effects.

The LD_PRELOAD does nothing to fix my problems.

Why don't you try beryl from SVN? Here -

Code: Select all

svn co http://svn.xgl-coffee.org/xgl-coffee/trunk xgl-coffee
you have ebuilds that works great for me. I wasn't able to compile properly beryl-0.1 in the fact.

As noted in my previous post:
I'm using:
NVIDIA-beta driver
Beryl-0.1.0
Xorg-7.1.1 from xgl-coffee's overlay (xorg-server-1.1.1-r3) with the following xorg.conf:
I'm already using coffee's overlay and compiling beryl-0.1 went without problems.

But I'll try your suggestion anyway sinds it are only a few tiny packages anyway (God bless Quinnstrom  )

Does anyone no where this message (see my previous post) hints to?:

Code: Select all

beryl: Another window manager is already running on screen: 0
beryl: No manageable screens found on display :0

works out-of-a-box from portage-xgl overlay :)

and I am pleased with it much because it doesn't causes enormous CPU usage like previous compiz-quinnstorm versions.
now it consumes much less CPU than metacity when moving windows here and there even with wobbly-windows enabled.
So I have:

34% Xorg
5% metacity

vs

4% Xorg
5% beryl

@R.I.P.

Have you tried it without Option "AIGLX" "True"?

Because the Nvidia howto doesn't mention it: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthr ... 8d&t=77030

I've tried it with both 'on' and 'off' and I still get the same error...

i managed to get everything work, still i got one problem left :

i modified kdmrc to start XGL instead of normal X

still i need to start beryl and emerald manually,
any hints wich scripts would be the best places to do this automatically
everytime i log on to a kde-session with a specific user?
Systems running gentoo :
Desktop, Laptop, ZOTAC AD-10 media-center, odroid-xu4 server / wLan-router

Everythings working out of the box here :/
I just installed the new nvidia drivers, checked out the xgl-coffee overlay and emerged beryl
and then I just put 'beryl-manager' in gnome-session-manager.

I have a problem with ctlr-alt-F? switching though, when I switch from the console back to X, only the mouse pointer shows, and moves, but everything appears hard-locked.

same on here, no solution so far except that the system isn't hardlocked, try ssh'ing to your machine and 'killall beryl'
will give you your desktop back at least. rerunn beryl from beryl-manager.

i think waiting for updates is all we can do for now :/

Treborius, you don't use/need AIGLX with the new nvidia drivers.

ejs76, had you tried any of the previous methods of starting compiz from portage? If so make sure you remove all the changes to any files you made before.

I had a few different issues, but the following xorg.conf works just fine without modification on both my 7800 GT systems and a 6600 GT system.

Nope, haven't played with compiz since my last fresh install. But maybe I did play around a bit following different howto's, but AFAIK I removed every script after testing and failing it.

Maybe I should wait a bit untill a stable Beryl release comes alone...

Thanks for the help anyway.

Hi,

well, Beryl (from the portage-xgl overlay) starts and I have effects. No segfaults.

Emerald starts too.

But I don't have any window-decorations, which makes it totally useless:

dbus-launch beryl --use-cow
XGL Absent, checking for NVIDIA
Nvidia Present
Relaunching beryl with __GL_YIELD="NOTHING"
XGL Absent, checking for NVIDIA
Nvidia Present
Initiating splash

(starting emerald in another konsole instance):
beryl: No GLXFBConfig for depth 32
beryl: No GLXFBConfig for depth 32
beryl: No GLXFBConfig for depth 32
beryl: No GLXFBConfig for depth 32
beryl: No GLXFBConfig for depth 32
beryl: No GLXFBConfig for depth 32

while emerald says this:
emerald --replace
Couldn't load settings. Reverting to defaults.

and nothing else. No decs, no errors, nothing.

I didn't tried this before, but when I checked this now it didn't worked without AIGLX.

UPDATE:
just for information I have ti4200 videocard and using gnome.
may be no-decoration issue occurs with kde only?

energyman76b,

Have you done a "ps -ef|grep emerald" to see if the window decorator is still running or does it seg fault? If it's still running go to the Emerald Theme Manager and try a different frame engine. A couple of them don't work for me either and you may need to reload emerald after making changes. I'm running the svn beryl packages from portage-xgl and I like it much better than the vanilla compiz.

I am not totally dump.

emerald run every time. And I did try different themes, and engines. Without success.

I have unmerged all beryl stuff, removed /usr/share/beryl and reinstall everything at this moment.

Next clinical trial:

Do you have this in your xorg.conf file? I've seen people say it goes in the Device section but I have it in my Screen section.

Code: Select all

Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "True"
Also, is your composite extension enabled?
