why does it need konqueror?

I'm trying to update a system but i don't need konqueror and don't want konqueror. Why it' trying to install it anyway? And kfind for that matter!?

Code: Select all

ghost ~ # emerge -vp --tree --deep --update world

These are the packages that would be merged, in reverse order:

because you have kde-base installed, and konqueror is part of KDE.

Yes, but I had it from first installation a year ago and never had tried to install konqueror.

i can't tell you why that is, but konqueror is a dep. of kde-base. since kde without konqueror isn't kde.

Specifically, it is startkde that is giving you Konqueror. Startkde is the default KDE session, which starts up with kdesktop as your desktop manager. Kdesktop uses Konqueror's icon views to display icons on the desktop.

Is there any way I could block this? I don't even use KDE anymore. I installed bare minimum just because of kmail.

Have you tried removing startkde and kdesktop? If you don't use KDE they shouldn't be necessary. Kmail should not require them.

You need to fin dout what is depending on konqueror, get rid of those and then you can safely get rid of konqueror. Two ways to do that:

Code: Select all

equery d kde-base/konqueror
or

Code: Select all

emerge -et world
and see in the tree view what depends on konq.

This is crazy. I have unistalled kdesktop and startupkde but now kdesktop is trying to install itselt but nothing depends on it. And kdesktop i pulling konqueror with it??!?!

Very frustrating.

The brute-force method: add

Code: Select all

kde-base/kdesktop
to /etc/portage/package.mask (create it and the /etc/portage directory if either doesn't exist) and rerun emerge. It'll complain that kdesktop is masked, but also tell you why it wanted to install it in the first place.

Good thinking.
Kdesktop is needed by KDM :(
uf..
NVM, I'll install konqueror and kfind and than unmerge them after system upgrade...

While you are at it, you may want to document this experience in a bug report to the ebuild maintainer. KDM has no actual dependency on kdesktop, so you shouldn't be forced to install it just for KDM.

I don't know about the original poster, but I've been using KDM (and not kdesktop) for quite a while because xfce doesn't login manager of its own. I also use a number of kde apps (k3b, kate ...) so I figured if I had to have extra libraries I'd stick with kde, but not the desktop.

Looks like I'll have to switch to gdm and eat its libraries too ... bleach

Can I unrequest the switch? Or maybe they (kdm and kdesktop) shouldn't be dependent on each other in either direction.

Why do you need to switch to gdm again? KDM dependant on kdesktop is an upstream dependancy, so your only hope it to bug the kde guys, but something tells me that they depend on each other for a good reason.

If you don't want any extra libs I would recommend xdm. I have used it for a while, and with a little tweaking it can look pretty awesome.

yeah, i'm that user too... I use kdm to log in both of my MythTV computers, though the wm is EvilWM. I figured MythTV was qt so I was stuck with installing qt like it or not, might as well use kdm. but this is just too much extra crap now.

the problem with that is xdm doesn't support auto login. there's some hack alternatives to auto login a session, but then if the frontend crashes and I need to relogin, which happens often enough, I can't get a X-login back (and running on a tv with a pvr 350 output, i have no display if not in X). I guess I'll switch to gdm, it's slightly less bloated.

You can always use the Quingy login manager. It actually runs on the framebuffer. Looks quite good. Doesn't require a bunch of upstream dependencies. There's a how-to on the wiki.

"without the overhead of running the X Window System." I don't think this will work on my main MythTV, the only way you can see anything at all on the tv through X and the ivtvdev driver. Thanks for the tip though, I never heard of Quingy so it's still good to know it's there. gdm is working out ok, my gf was happy with the little flower that is the default theme in gdm haha.

thanks
