I've got a Dell Inspiron e1405 laptop with an Intel HD Audio chipset. The output for it from lspci -vvv is:

It doesn't seem to work very well at all with ALSA. I have audio output, but I don't have the normal cornucopia of mixer settings (PCM, Line, Mic, Phone, Video, CD-ROM, PC Speaker, etc...), just Master (volume/mute), Capture (volume/capture), Capture Mux (volume), Capture Mux Capture (volume), and Input Source (settable only to "Mic"). (Note that changing Capture Mux changes Capture Mux Capture to the same volume, but changing Capture Mux Capture leaves Capture Mux untouched.)

And worse, I get no audio input. If I don't set anything to capture, /dev/sound/audio doesn't return any data. If I set Capture to capture, I get strange noise that varies in volume based on the Capture and Capture Mux volumes, but not the Capture Mux Capture volume. (It also varies slightly based on what is plugged into the Mic jack, but not to the extent that it sounds like real but garbled audio.) But most importantly, there is no Mic volume control, and so I can't select the Mic as a capture input!

Everything else (AFAIK) on this laptop works great, and I'd love to solve this problem. Any help that y'all could offer would be greatly appreciated.

Alright, I've gotten a bit further along.

I re-emerged all the alsa-* 1.0.13_rc2, packages, and I've got working audio input, but it's got other problems. First, occasionally the two stereo channels of the audio input will be offset a bit. Not a big problem. Second, jack sense doesn't work. If headphones aren't plugged in when the module is loaded, the laptop's internal speakers will stay on all the time, even if I plug headphones in later. And, conversely, if headphones are plugged in, the speakers will never turn on.

Alright, I'm just an idiot.

All of it (audio in *and* jack sense) seems to be working with the drivers included with 2.6.18.

Have a nice day.
