I recently moved to the UK from the US. I was wondering if anyone has any ideas on how to type the UK pound sign "L"
in a US keyboard.

Thanks

Run

Code: Select all

xmodmap -pke | grep sterling
You (might|will) get an entry like

Code: Select all

keycode 19 =0 parenright braceright degree braceright degree
with "sterling" where "braceright" or "degree" is in the example above.

If it is in the "braceright" position, then "AltGr + <the character after the =>" will give it, if it is in the "degree" position, it will be "Shift + AltGr + <the character after the =>"

If this doesn't work, post the output of

Code: Select all

xmodmap -pke | grep sterling

AFAIK the only way to get your changes noticed is to

Code: Select all

xmodmap -pke >~/.Xmodmap
edit the .Xmodmap in your home directory and restart X.

/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc (which I believe is run by all flavours of desktop/window manager) has this to say

Code: Select all

usermodmap=$HOME/.Xmodmap
...
if [ -f $usermodmap ]; then
    xmodmap $usermodmap
fi
There is also

Code: Select all

xinitdir=/etc/X11
sysmodmap=$xinitdir/Xmodmap
which doesn't exist. I imagine that if you wanted everybody to have sterling on their keyboard, you'd create /etc/X11/Xmodmap instead of ~/.Xmodmap.
