You have to have dbus automatically started.

1. Emerge dbus with your favourite options

Code: Select all

# emerge --verbose --ask dbus
2. Add dbus to the startup process

Code: Select all

# rc-update add dbus default
3. Start it manually for the moment...

Code: Select all

# /etc/init.d/dbus start
That should do the trick for you.

Ciao,

Dbus is started automatically and i'm still getting the same error. Do i perhaps need to be in a special group to get dbus access?

I too get the error:

Could not start GNOME Web Browser
Startup failed because of the following error:
Unable to determin the address of the message bus (try 'man dbus-launch' and 'man dbus-daemon' for help'

My USE flags whilst emerging gnome did contain dbus and hald as specified in the gentoo gnome howto.

I can run epiphany using the command dbus-launch epiphany.

The dbus and hld services are also running at startup.

This also works on my system. Is this dbus error we are getting perhaps a bug?

Either append dbus-launch to the beginning or use GDM to start it up.
